  1. FWIW, you can also direct connect the unRaid server to your HTPC and not even use a switch. That is the route I took since I didn't need the unRaid server to talk to any other systems on my network and I have only one unRaid Server.
  2. From what I've followed on the boards, most likely a DMA issue. You might want to stop the parity sync and verify.
  3. Has anyone else observed the same behavior? There is still a chance that this is just a problem with rharvey's particular configuration or installation.
  4. As far as I can tell, none of those options can handle an array of non-identical discs. I'm not ready to give up just yet. We still have to find out for sure if v234 is really defective or if it is just an issue with one person's particular installation. If we can verify that v234 does in fact work for data recover then I am happy with UnRaid as it is. I think it is obvious, however, that no further enhancements are likely to come forward. To me that is not a big deal as I use is as a DVD server and it does it's job well in that area. Was enough of UnRaid code GPL'd to serve as a base for an open source project?
  5. I certainly don't want the unRaid concept to die. How would the self-support option work?
  6. From the AVS thread, it seems that ExplorerXP does not offer a speed advantage. Someone did report that the DOS command "xcopy" was 5 tmes faster.
  7. The sale seems to be over. Fortunately, I ordered 2 before it ended. Deals on Outpost.com come and go really quickly.
  8. Thanks! Could you elaborate on the coupon? Is it from Maxtor or Staples and is it online or in a printed advertisement?
  9. I know that Maxtor doesn't have the best reputation right now, but thought I'd pass this along. The $99 price does not require rebates. http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4116853
  10. You're probably missing the parallels because you feel that it's legal to make backups of DVDs under fair use. The DMCA makes defeating copy protection illegal - there is no "gray area" here at all. From Lawrence Lessig's site dated today... Again, I'm all for GPL compliance as I think it is a really good system. But just as consumers expect a little understanding and leeway from the MPAA when it comes to breaking the DMCA for personal backup copies, users of GPLed software should expect a little patience and understanding when dealing with the GPL police. If a person is overwhelmed by a putting out a new release that fixes major issues and running a business, then the GPL police should show a little understanding. You've been reasonable and I feel an asset to the community. The others, however, couldn't look at the big picture and wait until UnRaid got on stable ground before demanding full GPL compliance. As you pointed out, the GPL is legally enforceable so it wasn't like UnRaid could refuse to comply long term. Tom was also very open about using GPLed code. He also explained that he business understood their responsibilities under the GPL but that wasn't quick enough for some.
  11. You might want to understand logical fallacies before accusing someone of committing one. I never claimed that the GPL shouldn't be honored - I just pointed out that the slashdot'ers that argue so loudly about "honoring licensing terms of the GPL" are the first ones to disregard the licensing restrictions of DRM and the legalities of the DMCA - even if they are only backing up media that they own and aren't going to share it. One more time to be clear - I never claimed that the GPL shouldn't be honored - I was just pointing out the inconsistencies and hypocrisies of some of the arguments that were being used. Slashdoters have no problem calling the MPAA or RIAA "nazis" when they get lawyers involved, but if lawyers are used for GPL then they're just preventing theft. Look, I'm on your side - I want the GPL honored - it would just be nice if a grown up approach could have used by those that felt that it wasn't happening quickly enough. Being a hypocrite doesn't invalidate a person's argument but it does make them lose credibility. Also, I doubt that there would have even been any reply posts to you if you hadn't taken such a pompus tone. Maybe that is not how you meant then to come across, but it's hard not to take them that way when you make demands and announce that you're losing patience when they aren't met quickly enough. Oh yeah, you might want to read my post again and understand that I wasn't accusing anyone of being a "pirate". I just pointed out that even though a person may own a DVD, breaking the copy protection to back it up is illegal under the DMCA and most likely the licensing terms.
  12. That's a pretty interesting idea! I'm curious if Circuit City will price match it though. A coworker of mine tried to get CompUSA to price match Fry's on the same deal yesterday and they refused. They claimed that at $89 they would be selling it below their cost (spoke to salesperson and manager). He didn't push it as he went to CompUSA to pickup other items anyway and he knew that he could just order it online with free shipping from Fry's. I'm going to try the Circuit City price matching offer tomorrow. The deal is actually $10 instant savings, $40 Circuit City mail in rebate and $40 Seagate mail in rebate. The $10 instant savings would almost certainly be eliminated on a price matching. The $40 Circuit City rebate may be invalidated on a price matching situation as well but I don't see how the $40 Seagate mail in rebate wouldn't still be valid. At worst, the drive should be $89 - $40 = $49 or at best $89 - $40 - $40 = $10 if both rebates are still valid. I imagine that these drives will be "out of stock" in cities where a Fry's is located - at least as long as Fry's sale lasts.
  13. For use in an unRaid array, what would be the advantage of a 16MB cache over a 8MB cache? In an HTPC application where the unRaid server would just be serving up ripped DVDs, I wouldn't think the difference would come into play but I would llike to make sure. Could the smaller cache increase the likelihood of stutters on playback?
  14. The Atlanta store has a limit of one per customer so I bought 1 of the 16mb cache at $89.99 and 1 of the 8mb cache at $79.99. The outpost.com site limits the drives to 1 person household as well. I don't know if a person could just place multiple orders to get by it.
