  1. Here's http://www.extremetech.com/computing/90634-how-to-build-your-own-135tb-raid6-storage-pod-for-7384 a very interesting article that discusses how Backblaze (http://www.backblaze.com/) makes it's 135tb storage pod's. Unfortunately, these pods are RAID 6. The article is very detailed in schematic's and a parts list. This pod idea makes me think about a platinum/unlimited version of unRAID where you could have as many drives as you want. Enjoy UCD'ers Rick
  2. Joe, I just downloaded version 1.6.5. A documentation comment and request. Reading the code, there is mention of the 'p' option on line 41 (added in version 1.6) but there is no mention of the 'p' switch/option in the script help (function usage) lines 74-98. This means that if I do a: cache_dirs -h I will not see any reference to the 'p' switch. Considering your comments on lines 129-136, I think it is important that people know about changing cache_pressure and the 'p' switch should be documented. Please consider updating the usage function to include 'p' switch. Thanks, Rick
  3. As an FYI for this thread, To clarify the issue of writing to an unRAID server from Win 7 x64, there is no ongoing issue. I have two unRAID servers here and I do massive sync's from a Windows 2003 server through Win 7 Pro x64 over to the unRAID server and I have never seen any Windows timeout errors. In short, Windows 7 x64 and unRAID are perfectly compatible. Rick
  4. Thanks but, My mistake. I misunderstood the valid users and exceptions permissions on user shares. Rick
  5. Hi All, I have a user share (/mnt/user/SalesStorage) in 4.7 and today, I realized that I put the split level number in the Min. free space so I corrected my mistake and clicked apply. Now a number of my users cannot access the share. Looking in the system log, I see: Mar 10 11:38:40 PUN1 emhttp: shcmd (22): mkdir '/mnt/user/SalesStorage' Mar 10 11:38:40 PUN1 emhttp: shcmd (23): chmod 700 '/mnt/user/SalesStorage' Mar 10 11:38:40 PUN1 emhttp: shcmd (24): rm /etc/samba/smb-shares.conf >/dev/null 2>&1 Mar 10 11:38:40 PUN1 emhttp: shcmd (25): cp /etc/exports- /etc/exports Mar 10 11:38:40 PUN1 emhttp: shcmd (26): killall -HUP smbd Mar 10 11:38:40 PUN1 emhttp: shcmd (27): /etc/rc.d/rc.nfsd restart | logger The directory /mnt/user/SalesStorage is still there but cannot be accessed. How can I fix this? Should I click undo? This share has over 1tb of data and I cannot lose it. TIA, Rick
  6. Joe, Thanks again for the speedy analysis. I will RMA. Rick
  7. Thanks Joe, SMART report attached. I did not know which options to use with 'smartctl' so I used '--all' I also tried '--test=short' and '--test=long' but both of those commands came back to the shell prompt immediately without reporting anything. I cannot tell for sure if the drive is bad but it looks like it. What do you think? Rick smartctl.txt
  8. Hi All, I am running unRAID Pro 4.7 with three WD EARS 2TB drives. I ran pre-clears on all the drives (no jumper, preclear_disk.sh 1.6 using the 'A' option) and they checked out ok. When I set the initial devices, the parity check begins and the data drives are successfully fotmated. At about 2-3% into the parity check, I start to get an error count on one of the drives. I stopped the check, opened the case and re-positioned the drive (by it's serial number) to use a different power plug and SATA cable. I booted the array at which point the configuration was invalid so I ran 'initconfig' and re setup the devices and the parity check begun again. Again at about 2-3% into the check, the same drive starts accumulating an error count. Syslog attached. My question is, in your opinion, should I RMA this drive? TIA, Rick syslog.zip
  9. Thanks Rajahal & bcbgboy13, The parts have been ordered. I like the case as once I reach my limit with the six internal drive bays, I can (I hope) put a 5-in-3 as the case has 3 external bays (assuming no CD). I will also have to buy a PCIe SATA card at that point but the motherboard has one PCIe connector I can use. I missed the offer on the case. The next best price was from BestDirect at $55.99 (double ouch). The shipping on those cables did increase but not much. The shipping from both NewEgg and BestDirect was way too high. These guys should give you free shipping on a decent order. Rick
  10. I have decided to try and build a 6 drive budget box. Here is what I plan to order as of right now: Case: Antec 300 http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000GQMHBI/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB (thanks to Fred http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=10902.0 for the heads on on this deal) Mobo: Biostar TA785G3+ http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138301&Tpk=Biostar%20TA785G3%2b PSU: Corsair CMPSU-430CX http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139017&Tpk=CMPSU-430CX CPU: AMD Sepron 140 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103698&cm_re=AMD_Sepron_140-_-19-103-698-_-Product RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR3 1066 KVR1066D3N7/2G http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134751&Tpk=KVR1066D3N7/2G Sata Cables (locking): Link Depot 39.37" x6 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189205&cm_re=locking_sata_cable-_-12-189-205-_-Product The hard drives will be WD EARS. Cost is about $200 plus shipping and hard drives. I tried to use very common and cheap parts. Everything except the motherboard is well known here. I picked the motherboard from some recent threads here. Your thoughts/opinions, Rick
  11. From a networking point of view, you need to make sure the switch has automatic MDI/MDI-X configuration (reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-MDIX#Auto-MDIX). This is the ability of a switch to detect a connection to another switch/router as opposed to a connection to a computer. Without Auto-MDI/MDI-X, the cable between the two switches/routers must be a crossover cable (reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable). Granted, most modern networking equipment has auto MDI/MDI-X built in but I would always check for it since I am always daisy-chaining (reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_chain_(information_technology)) networking equipment together. This feature is also essential if you plan on connecting your broadband router (which still has 100BASE-T [reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Ethernet] ports) to your switch. Without it, you will need a crossover cable. Rick
  12. Thanks Joe, Checking my unRAID memory stick, I do not see any timezone files. Not a big problem. It won't be a problem until DST takes effect in March. Rick
  13. Just tried it......this message pops up. Ok, I don't get any message. I'll wait and try another time. Thanks, Rick
  14. Thanks eroz...But, When I press 'download', it does nothing (the page re-loads). Tried with three different browsers. Iron, Firefox and IE. Any other ideas? Rick
