  1. Hi, I want to use unRaid 6 on my system. I do have 4 disks running in a Raid 5 on BTRFS. How could I migrate to unRaid the most easiest way ? Any ideas? Thanks

    Raid Alternative

BTRFS is an option only as soon as RAID5 is out of experimental - the rest is great on BTRFS. Also using mhddfs I can let single disks to spin down and only use the disks I need for my home server - and files are spread not junks/blocks. gsmartcontrol is not an option - I do not have a GUI installed on the system so far and want to keep it that way so if you find a web based tool for monitoring the hardware properly and easily - let me know thanks

    Raid Alternative

no what I did was setting up ubuntu to work nearly like unraid. mounting the existing reiserfs disk and merge them using mhddfs - which was zero work at all. (if I have time I start converting - perhaps. installed plex - using the unRaid folder structure I hadn't to change anything after copy my old plex config back installed crashplan - works like a charm also after reboot using snapraid for my parity disk - took the old unRaid disk formated it to ext4 and done - parity is created once a day hdparm & hd-idle solved the spindown for me installing vmware workstation without GUI let me now connect to it using another PC to move VMwares there now my system works nearly like unRAID but with more flexibility, added another HDD to mhddfs and snapraid without any issue. what I am missing now is a "monitoring" interface to see what the disks are doing, if they are idle and so on. Then I am set - and have replaced my unRAID with an ubuntu.

    Raid Alternative

I spent a few hours yesterday to recreate my server using Ubuntu 14.04 server edition. thanks to the way unRAID is storing data it was very easy - nearly all services are up and running and the performance seems to be better than before. the only thing I am missing is the web based overview what that status of my disk is - like smart, temp, idle, active etc? has somebody an idea what to use ? thanks

    Raid Alternative

Hi together, before I start asking my question I wanted to mention that I love how Unraid as a Raid is working - it is actually perfect for me as a home user but ... Unraid as a HomeServer OS is not what I really want. I hate the plugin management and the quality how the plugins are created. I really be annoyed about the way to install new software from the slack repo and so on ... Also I cannot afford having Unraid running as an Storage only and have a second server for plex, crashplan, www etc etc which is using unraid as a datastore. Therefor - my question - is there any raid solution like unraid which allows storing complete files per disk and create a parity. Also if I need data - only one disk is spinning up instead of the whole raid? I am fine if I have to pay for it - but I would prefer to have a linux running on my server. Or is it possible to have UnRaid integrated into a Debian or CentOS installation without being a NASA experienced system administrator? Also the 6.x version with virtualization is not really an option for me - it is complete overhead for what I need and the easy management of VMs - is not considered in my opinion in 6.x I also thought about running Unraid as a VM - but my hardware is not supporting pass-through - which makes it risky for data storing on my harddisk using RDM. As it seems not really much experience from the community about it - which makes it now an optione at this point. Thanks for any advice
  7. ah ok, thanks for that is there any option to get the drives spinning down using RDM - I read something about but is it really possible somehow. because if disk not spinning down - I can use every other RAID system - because thats the huge benefit of unraid - of spinning one disk up only if needed when watching a movie.
  8. Hi, I read through a lot information now about RAW device mapping - is somebody really using it productive or is it only testing? I would like to read something from someone who still uses it productive for their home networks or whatever. Thanks
  9. Thanks for the information - RDM could be the solution thanks I gonna try this at home and keep you posted. If somebody else has some experience to share I would love to hear about it.
  10. Hi together, I read through the forum to get my questions answered but still I am not feeling 100% satisfied. I am running unRaid since a few month - nearly a year - now and like the way unraid handles my data It works great on my HP Microserver N40L and I got really overwhelmed hearing about XEN integration in 6.x After a few nights and a lot of thinking - I am kind of stuck in how I should proceed - I am using my Microserver with 3x3TB drives mainly for data storage and it serves this data using SMB or using PlexMediaServer to my TV or mobile Clients. More often I have to fire up VMWare Workstation on my private or business laptop to run the one or other VMware image to do some routing virtualization and testing - nothing really CPU or IO intense but still - I have to take the images with me to run them locally. Now - I thought XEN would solve my needs in the future to let those simulations run on the Microserver - but my colleagues and the companies creating those "virtualized labs" are providing vmware images only. Converting the images all the time needs a lot of work, I gonna lose snapshots and sometimes the network configuration has to be redone - so this is not really an option - especially if I have to give the images back to the author - with my changes in it. now I thought about running unraid within ESXi so I can use the spare resources (which would be enough for what I need) to run those simulations beside - but as I read - without VT-D passthrough it is not a good idea at all to run unraid. How can I get a solution for my issue - having pre-created vmware images which the microserver can perfectly serve (tested this with another usb stick having only esxi on it) and unraid which I really like and I don't wanna live without any more. Thanks for suggestions
  11. I have Dynamix up and running for weeks, and no emhttp crashes and - as the developer - I do a lot with Dynamix webGui and optional plugins. Are you running other plugins which are memory hungry and eventually let emhttp starve ? One workaround to prevent emhttp from being killed by the OS, is to put the following in your 'go' script (and run manually): # Set webGUI never killed off echo -1000 > /proc/$(pgrep -f /usr/local/sbin/emhttp)/oom_score_adj thats good to know - started cache_dirs yesterday and I indexed to much folders which ate up my 8GB RAM and emhttp was one of the things getting killed which is kind of dump. gonna try this to keep emhttp alive thanks
  12. It looks like an incomplete IP address, you network is not 192.168.30.x ? Hi, range belongs to me thats right and it seems like the last octet gets cutted off on the active stream tab. The IP on the Users page shows up right and can be assigned to a user - but then the matching to the active stream tab is not working. I assume based on the missing octet on that site. cheers and thanks
  13. hi, I looked at active streams today - after installing your WebUI - and wondered what this means (see screenshot). I assume that plex is indexing my Movies (plex and movies are on the same unraid system) but the Username is nor an IP nor something which fits into my network. Perhaps you can clarify the information presented here.
  14. thanks a lot like to get a new view of the problem - so I fixed that one and learned something new about unraid also started a thread about plex scanner and decoding problem in the plex forum. thank you very much
  15. hi, thats what I thought as well, but - why is plex python scipt also seeing those strange characters instead of the umlaute and crashing? but smb is able to process them ?! and yes - you are right - changing putty to UTF-8 fixed everything for the putty session. plex still having problems
