  1. Quick question I could not find an answer to: Can you copy files to a drive while doing the parity check or does this mess it up? Thanks, Reed
  2. Damn... figured it out... This may be nice for someone else... Gotta turn compatibilitt mode off... that made it work.. thanks pro.
  3. Sorry first didnt see a AHCI in the menu and then did that without changing combined to OFF.... I think I got it now... thanks! Reed
  4. Ok, changed to AHCI and found that the boot devices changed.. I got it to boot with AHCI, however it is still only showing 4 SATA drives... Is this a limitation of the hard drive? How do I get the 5th drive to show up at SATA? Any help is appreciated! Sorry for the string, just looking for some help and dont want someone to trouble shoot a issue I already figured out. Thanks. Reed
  5. Ok, tried changing to AHCI and it wont boot.. just goes to a hardware monitor... do I need to change something else when I do this? Is this going to mess up my whole drive? Thanks, Reed
  6. TA880GB + mother board... Found this in the manual (different screen than put up above) BIOS EHCI Hand-Off This item allows you to enable support for operating systems without an EHCI hand-off feature. Options: Enabled (Default) / Disabled DO I need to disable the above? or is it... OnChip SATA Channel This option allows you to enable the on-chip Serial ATA. Options: Enabled (Default) / Disabled OnChip SATA Type <-- OR IS IT THIS ONE CHANGE TO AHCI? This option allows you to select the on-chip Serial ATA operation mode. Options: Native IDE (Default) / RAID / AHCI / Legacy IDE / IDE????AHCI SATA IDE Combined Mode This option controls the SATA/PATA combined mode. Options: Enabled (Default) / Disabled
  7. I checked bios and Im not sure what selection to make to turn this into a SATA vs IDE... little help? Screen shot attached. Reed
  8. Guys, I aded drive number 6 and the controller is showing is as IDE even though it is SATA... Someone told me to check the bios, but im not sure how to make that show up as SATA and not IDE.... little help? Mobo is a Biostar P88A (recommended on this forum).. attached is a screen shot of the bios: I want to preclear this and get it up but I dont want to take a performance hit. Thanks!
  9. SO after my blowup yesterday, I still want to add a HD to the system. Specs- Version 4.6 Few questions: 1. I added the physical hard drive and plugged it in (to the right slot this time). Its visible in the drop down menu, in bios, however when I dmesg|grep SATA|grep link I dont see it. Here is the screen shot of the drop down. It says IDE, but its plugged into the SATA port. What gives? If it is indeed IDE, will it affect performance? 2. I need to preclear it (hasnt been done yet). Can I do that while the array in running? As long as I dont preclear the wrong drive, I should be ok, right? Thanks! Reed
  10. Ok, first of all, THANK YOU for responding quickly sacretagent... I figured it out and it was PURELY my fault. I was asleep at the wheel. Bottom line, Im a moron and essentially wired the SATA drive backward (up to down vs down to up)... I was adding a new drive and needed to pull the sata cables and then just put em back wrong. Now I need to take a deep breath before I go and start playing with the new drive... Good news is I put them in the right slots, and everything is fine... I was basically having a nervous breakdown. Ok, now time to go figure out why my main PC is bluescreening on me. FML Reed
  11. So I made some hardware changes and plugged the wrong discs in the wrong SATA slots... I booted the drive, found the error and fixed it, but it still says I have an error. am I screwed?!?! HELP! I have lots of data.. I have 4 drives in array: 1 sata1- drive 1 2 SATA2- drive 2 3 SATA3- Drive 3 4 Sata 4- parity? Please help! Reed
  12. Do you need to create the var/ temp folder?! nevermind... I guess not on this one.. But I cant get this to play a video... video plays for 3 seconds and then stops... what am I doing wrong? Doesnt look to be that much hard drive activity: AMD sempron with 2 gb memory
  13. THANKS FOR THE HELP! I did assign a root password, but cant someone just mess the whole thing up from the web interface? Reed
  14. Ok, Im a newb so bear with me. I worked in the DOS days, but new to linux so these may sound really dumb. 1, the go script is essentially a task list that runs commands on boot, right? can I just copy the go file, update it on my windows machine as a txt file, and copy it back or does it have special formatting? 2, what is the difference between a user share or a disk share? if the system is just one big drive, why do disk1 and disk2 show up when I browse across the network? I created a user share called video and just started putting all my data there.. why do I need disk1 and disk2 to show up? is that to manually copy items from a physical disk? FYI I answered this one for anyone else who may have had the same question... under SHARES - EXPORT SETTINGS change DISK SHARES SMB to DONT EXPORT. 3. Does the powerdown script stop the array and shutdown? Im trying to bind the server to the power button so that a push turns it on (obvious) and then the power button runs the power script. That way i can just hit the case power when Im done using the server and it will shut down safely. Will adding this line to the go script do it )mobo supporting of course)? sysctl -w kernel.poweroff_cmd="/sbin/powerdown" Also see #1 to answer this one... 4. What is the syntax to make a user share a Export NFS share... ie what goes in that box to enable NFS? 5. Si I have my unraid behind a firewall on my network. however, someone can go to the webpage from WITHIN my network and make adjustments... anyway to prevent this? Reason i ask is that at my house, I can control access to my network (as much as anyone can) but it I were to use a server like this in a more small business netowrk, I would have less control and the last thing I would want is someone screwing with the settings and KILLING all of my data... any ideas? 6.Whats the best way to measure copy performance? 7. Whats the best way to get 4 tb data onto my unriad FROM my syno box so it doesnt take weeks and I need to leave another computer on to manage the copy? Im sure I will have more questions... Im liking this so far... Reed
