  1. Which is fine, and doesn't require either an announcement or taking a unnecessary (and ill informed) shot at the developer before you depart. it doesn't require you to reply either....but here we are. it might be shocking but what I look for in a back up solution is software that doesn't corrupt my god damn files. sure its a beta, but even v5 final was not functioning properly for me. if i had known the development life cycle was so all over the place I wouldn't have purchased a license. I'm sorry but this is just a sloppy piece of software by any standards and the fact that there's a hardcore community doesn't change that.
  2. Hey its nothing personal fellas, unraid just isn't for me.
  3. I haven't been running unraid for more than a year but holy hell is it ever sloppy in its development - I'm moving over to linux+snapraid. kthxbye
  4. I tried using this VHD and set it up the same way I did with 5.0.4 but am having some issues. I passed through my SATA and USB controllers no problem. unraid sees all of my drives and detects my flash drive. The plus key is in the config folder but it doesn't seem to be registering. Also any changes I try to make to settings don't seem to work either...
  5. I've tried ESXI, unraid 6 and Xenserver, and Xenserver suits me the best. My 5.0.4 VM is humming along perfectly, except over time the transfer speeds drop to almost nothing, but the problem gets solved by a reboot. Even after a reboot my transfer speeds to the protected array hard drives are 10-15mb/second, whereas when I was running unraid 6 before I was getting speeds between 30-50mb/second. I'm wondering if updating the unraid VM to 5.0.5 or one of the unraid 6 betas might solve the issue. Has anyone successfully updated their unraid VM in xenserver? Otherwise, any ideas?
  6. I tried U1 as well, it seems to be an issue with passing through onboard SATA only, my pci sata card passed through fine but it didn't have enough ports for my entire unraid array.
  7. It was a fresh install of 5.5 but I was able to get all of the drivers injected from earlier versions without issue. The problem was that when I tried to passthrough my onboard SATA controller the VM wouldn't be able to see any of the drives connected to it - when looking for a solution it seems that this is a common problem with 5.5.
  8. The only thing stopping me from using 5.5 was the inability to passthrough the onboard SATA controller to unraid. Overall 5.5 seems more stable and passes through the GPU without issue, for instance I had to do a pcihole fix in 5.1 which wasn't required in 5.5 to get more than 2gb of ram. The only thing I couldnt' get going was DXVA in Windows, no matter what I did and with 2 different video cards it wouldn't work. DXVA works perfectly in Xen though. I'm going back and forth between esxi and xen right now but I'm still on the fence, both have their strong and weak points. If I had a solid PCI-e sata controller and could get DXVA to work in windows, esxi 5.5 would be my choice for sure.
  9. I'm using a SYBA PEX20140 for USB passthrough of keyboard/mouse on a Windows 8VM, it uses an ETRON usb controller. It passes through without issue for me on ESXi 5.1 and 5.5. http://www.amazon.com/Syba-External-19-Pin-Header-SY-PEX20140/dp/tech-data/B009LIPFEI
  10. No dice, couldn't get PCI passthrough working with XEN. Switched over to ESXi now and I'm using a Windows 8 XBMC VM appliance
  11. I would think its worth it, but be prepared to possibly spend a lot of time tinkering and also possibly buying more hardware that will work properly with esxi
  12. I figured I'd post up my ESXi just in case anyone with similar hardware is thinking about it. Hardware: Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 CPU - AMD FX-4100 (4 core x 3.6ghz) RAM - 16gb 1600mhz non-ecc ram Video card: AMD Radeon HD 5450 SATA Controller: Syba PEX40039 (ASMedia 1061) USB Controller: Syba PEX 20140 (Etron EJ188) I fiddled with ESXi 5.5 at first and got frustrated after having passthrough problems with my SATA controller. I downgraded to 5.1 update 2 and everything was fixed. If you're going to be doing any sort of passthrough just avoid 5.5 for now. The cheapo Syba controller is for my SSD datastore. Then I have my onboard sata controller passed through to unraid. There was one issue where after enabling passthrough on the onboard SATA controller the Syba one would disappear as well, leaving me with no datastore. I got around this by manually initializing the AHCI drivers after boot in the init.d The video card and usb controller go to Windows 8.1 which is my media center now, with XBMC and Netflix. Then I have a debian VM for torrents and owncloud. ESXi was a huge headache for me to set up, but definitely worth it now that it's done.
  13. Thanks for this! Any issues with clean shutdown? Or using VMWare tools?
  14. I'm going to take a crack at this on the weekend, it'd be nice to be able to get rid of another device from my home theater
  15. I'm having an issue where transmission or deluge can't download to my cache drive, I get permission denied errors. I tried mounting using samba and nfs and I can write to the mount as root, but not through a torrent client. Any ideas? *EDIT* solved, just had to change some file permissions
  16. great guide, I got Arch working on the first go through so far so good! now I just gotta figure out PCI passthrough
  17. I'd appreciate a little info on how to set that up... Which OS? Which .xml files you use? etc... Right now I'm using it on an Openelec box but I've set it up on my windows laptop or my ubuntu desktop before as well. I didn't use any XML files, I just set my Denon Remote to a Panasonic Bluray player's code, then I used the flirc software to program all the keys in to the corresponding buttons on the remote, it's surprisingly easy and way better than any remote solution I've used previously.
  18. I use flirc so my denon avr remote can control xbmc
  19. Yeah I figure that makes more sense, I have v5 running now. I'll just wait till an RC of v6 comes out and just tinker with that.
  20. I don't know either to be honest. I've gotten as far as getting ESXi to boot on the computer, logging in with VMSphere client and setting up a datastore, but I haven't tried messing with setting up unraid in it. I guess I would just have to plop a VMDK on the datastore and see what happens. I guess if I set up ESXi now it wouldn't be a big deal to transition to unraid 6 with xen once a stable version comes out
  21. Right now the 1 parity drive with 2 data drives are enough for me, once theyre filled I will probably add more but I don't see myself with more than the 7 drives allowed by the plus key. Unraid is perfect for my data needs, i just want to get the most out of my hardware if possible. If i was to go the ESXi route I would put in another ssd to act as a datastore.
  22. Hey everyone, first post here. I just built my first unraid box using a computer I've been wanting to retire. Its in my media room so I want to keep it as quiet as possible. Here are the specs: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA990FXA-UD3 CPU: AMD FX-4100 quad core 3.8ghz RAM: 8gb ddr3 1600mhz HDD: just 3 for now, 2x3tb and 1x2tb. I will pop in more once I fill up vid card: Radeon 5450 passive heatsink I feel it's a little wasted on just unraid and since its in my media room I wanted to use virtualization so it can replace my raspberry pi and my Roku as I have way too many devices now. I'd also like to put a bare minimal installation of linux on it to handle plugins (not a fan of installing plugins on unraid) I've gotten ESXi to boot up fine on my machine, I just have to take the plunge to create vmdk's. I'm seeing alot about unraid 6 with Xen though so I was wondering if I should just wait for that, but it might be a long way off. Any opinions?
