  1. I have 2 new PCIE v3 SAS cards for my unraid server and want to replace my single PCIE v2 and Expander with the 2 new cards and no expander. I wanted to know if anyone has done something like this and how I should go about it? I think I should do the following: 1. Take a screenshot of the drives in the array and what slots they are in. 2. Shutdown array and computer 3. Replace card and expander with new cards 4. Turn on computer and set up new cards bios's to be HBA and make sure their firmware is good. 5. Turn on to unraid and make sure all drives are present. 6. Put drives back into the array in the same slot 7. Turn on array and hope it works Does that sound right? Thanks so much
  2. I went ahead and did the procedure all looks good so far rebuilding happening.
  3. I just saw today that I have a red ball on a drive. I am unsure when it happened. I don't know if anything has been written to the array / the failed disk after it has happened. I have run through unmenu a smart report and the drive seems to be fine. Will I lose data running: How do I re-enable the drive? Okay, the cable was loose, or I think the failure was a fluke - how can I get unRAID to reuse this same disk that it thought had failed? If you are sure that the drive is fine, and the SMART report confirms it, and you have not written to the drive since it was taken off-line, then use the Trust My Array procedure, to quickly recover your drive and the array to an all green condition. Remember, it was taken out of service when a "write" to it failed so using the "trust" procedure will effectively forget the data written while the drive was disabled. Unless you are certain you have not written to the disk a reconstruction is much better. You can re-enable the hard drive and reconstruct it as follows: Stop the array. Go to the Devices page and un-assign the disk. Go to the main page and start the array. Stop the array again. Go to the Devices page and re-assign the disk. Go to the Main page - system should indicate there is a "new" drive to replace the disabled one. Check the confirmation box and click Start to start a parity-reconstruct of the disk. Otherwise what else should I do? Thanks, Scott
  4. I am running the newest version of 4. What is that 4.7? Anyway I have been thinking of updating to version 5.beta12a. What are the thoughts on that? Also what are the instructions for each version 4 and 5?
  5. I currently have my system with 6 motherboard SATA and a 8 port SAS card connected to 3 icy docks. I have decided I want to move to a Norco 4224 case and put in a second 8 port SAS card to support that. I am unsure of how to do this while preserving the data on my drives. I have 8, 2TB drives all of them have data on them. Thank you for the time to explain this process.
  6. I figured out the problem. Basically you need to set up everything before starting the array for the first time. Please see my post for a detailed explanation of what I am talking about: unRaid NAS Server Setup
  7. Thought the community would want to come join in on a conversation on REDDIT one of the biggest user forums of them all. Good way to get more disccusions about unRAID itself. http://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/fmymb/my_friend_is_building_a_unraid_nas_server_i/
  8. There is currently a pretty good discussion going on REDDIT about this : http://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/fmymb/my_friend_is_building_a_unraid_nas_server_i/
  9. I would tend to agree. I am very happy so far with the core i3 it does add a bit to the cost though.
  10. I really like the case it was inexpensive and it is pretty solid. I am not a huge fan of the large side fan, but that is the only real thing I compromised on. I don't want my server case to be a gaming case with all sorts of flash. I was originally thinking that I was going to go with the 15 bays on the outside and put the parity and cache drive inside for a total of 17 drives, but in reality they don't fit like that and I was only dreaming. I ended up leaving the 2nd AOC-SASLP-MV8 controller out and I am returing it. I will purchase a smaller less expensive 2 port card to do the last drive and have one extra SATA port for extra stuff. Yes I agree i was going for low power on the i3 since it is only 72 watts and I found that the i3 computers with multiple drives can sit around 30-50 watts at idle. I have my power bill to think of. Besides I was also interested in running handbrake on the server in the future. The 5x3 fans are not loud at all in fact they are not as loud as the case fans. I would say the entire rig is around 30-35 decibels, but that is an estimate. I am also lucky that it sits next to a dell server that is probably around 50 dB. Keep in mind with the stock fans not something to have in your family room more then likely but not bad at all.
  11. I appreciate the read and nice words. I agree with you I wish I would have had a C clamp to flatten the tabs would have been so much faster and really the same end goal.
  12. After the parity check with the security turned to simple the array is working good. I now need to start putting in more settings and see if it will hold. I don't want to leave this thread hanging in case someone else has a similar problem.
  13. Update 02/21/11: Added the Setup Article I would like to take a moment to share my unRAID server with the group. The first link tells about the research put into the project and purchasing the equipment. The second link shows a detailed approach to the build with how I dremelled the case, routed all the cables, and installed the software. The third link shows a detailed approach to how I setup using Active Directory. The fourth link will show using the server on a daily basis information. I hope that this post helps users doing their research to be able to build there own server. The Research and Specifications are here: unRAID NAS Server Research & Specifications The Build Process is here: unRaid NAS Server Build The Setup is here: unRaid NAS Server Setup The Use is here: (coming soon)
  14. well so far I have taken out 3 hard drives and only kept the WD20EARS. I have completely reinstalled unRAID. I have run initconfig and done a new parity check and now I wait.
  15. I am very new to unRAID but I am having a few problems. I have my drives online and the array built. I am joined to my domain using AD permissions and I have the following: 1. my user shares show up in the //TOWER folder but they are not accessible. 2. two of my disks are not accessible disk1 and disk2 I can not figure out this problem for the life of me any help would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind I am new and may need steps spelled out a little more then usual. My network is working correctly. EST001 pings to 192.168.2.1 this also happens when you use the direct 192.168.2.1 with no DNS or WINS. syslog attached bing281 syslog-2011-02-15.txt
  16. I just got my server up and running. I will be putting the build process on my blog soon. So far everything is running very well.
  17. Yeah i noticed after I got all the equipment and found that I didn't need the extra 8 port card. I was originally thinking I was not going to put the parity and cache drives in the hot swap bays and was going to put it somewhere inside the case. But now looking at how full the case is I don't think that is going to happen. So I agree with you that I should just forgo the card and return it. I can't return the 2 8087 cables because I purchased them on eBay though. Maybe I should see if anyone wants to purchase the card with the cables here for a small savings. I think I paid about 140 or so for it with the cards. Also thanks for the advice. I look forward to messing around with the server and I don't plan on moving my 1.5 tb array straight away just a copy first then play with it and break it a few times then move it. Finally I have a build post in draft I will be sure to post them both to UDC when I am all done. Scott
  18. Hello I wanted to share my UnRAID server that I recently purchased and am in the process of building currently. I am waiting for the processor to show up so that I can continue the build process but I have written down all the specs to share with the group: http://eyespytechnologies.net:8080/?p=46 bing281
