I have a WD Red 8TB drive sealed from WD. Warranty expires March 2019. It was a replacement for a failed 8TB drive that I sent back to them that I don't need anymore. Would this work?
-
Weird, I don't see any signatures and no way to edit in my profile either.
Ahh, got it, thanks.

Just how old are you talking?
This is your current sig, it looks pretty old to me.
unRAID 5.0 Final
Corsair CX500 PSU | 3 x iStarUSA 5-in-3 Hot Swap Cages
JetWay JHZ03-GT-V2-LF Motherboard | AMD Sempron 140 CPU | 2x1GB RAM
2 x Hitachi 2TB | 2 x Samsung 2TB | 1 x Samsung 1.5TB | 1 x WD 2TB | 1 x Seagate 4TB | 1 x WD 6TB
Where'd you find that?!?! Exactly what I'm looking for, thanks! Everything is current except for all the newer 8TB drives and 8-port SATA card.

Maybe?
After wasting 30mins there I posted here Forums are dynamic and since archive.org can't access the backend database it doesn't work.

I had my system specs in my signature for the old forum and when the forum software was upgraded it's now lost. How can I find a cached page so I can copy the specs to my PC?

Fractal design R2 XL. At the moment 8 disc's in the std cages. I also have 3 in the IcyDock. With some adjustments you can add another 4 disc's below but you need to buy another cage.
I'm using the 3 standard 120mm fans that were included and added a 4th. I also have the one in the icydock.
So even the drives in the stock slots stay cool? That's a nice case.

Room isn't that hot. Around 23-24 degrees. In my previous case, an old CM stacker, all my disc's were hitting the high 40's during parity check with a top of ~50.
Since my new case I don't have these issues anymore.
What new case are you using now? Those IcyDock cages could replace my iStarUSA cages.

I have the hot-swap. Temp of the disk was around 34 during a parity check. I just put in a new HGST 6TB disk in that cage and during the preclear the temp didn't go over 34-35 degrees.
What's the room temp during a parity check?

All things being equal-good case air flow, reasonable ambient temperatures, etc., you shouldn't have heat issues with a quality low noise fan in this cage.
What's the room temp during a parity check?
5 hours ago, tucansam said:I use three 5-in-3 iStarUSA cabinets in a little different way. My server case has five 120mm evac fans (technically six since my power supply vents out, not a pull-from-bottom config), and I removed the entire fan assembly from the iStarUSA cages. This removed noise and allows all five case fans to pull air directly through the front venting on the drive cages. The case is otherwise completely sealed, thus 100% of air that enters the case and is vented by the fans has to pass over the drives first.
I am presently modifying the case to instead use 4 220mm fans for evac, increasing airflow and reducing noise. Will keep a very slow, quiet 120mm fan in the traditional rear position to vent CPU heat directly.
For a while I was actually doing the same thing with the same iStarUSA 5in3 cages and I removed the stock fans. My case only had two 120mm fans along with the 80mm PSU fan and it didn't work at all. Temps were terrible at 40+ with a room temp of 76F. Could have been that my exhaust fans weren't good for that purpose. I only had 8 drives out of the 15 available. It must be quiet because it sits next to my desk and I work from home.
What case are you using?

This one has a 120mm. The leds can be turned off
Do you have the cage or the hot-swap version? What do your temps look like for a parity check and what is room temp?

Thanks Fireball, Auto Shutdown has been working great lately.

Thanks for working on this Fireball. When I run the script it seems to just loop at this point. I have all checks set to "no" except for lock file and disks parked. No IP checks either.

I use the CX500 without issues, but many here recommend avoiding the CX line for server use. They're really cheap for a reason.

What exactly does Carabolic's script do?
I'm able to sleep the server with the "echo -n mem > /sys/power/state" command and wake via magic packet, but I don't like putting the server to sleep without first making sure nothing is running or being accessed, and I'd like the drives to be spun down before the server goes to sleep. Is this possible? I'm on 5.0 Final.

I would suggest using "screen" when ever using preclear... I can't tell you how many times I've run preclear in a telnet window only to accidentally close it!
Jim
+1. Look at This Tutorial for info on Screen and preclearing with it.
-
^ Did you use Screen when you initiated the preclear script?
-
Yes, perfectly normal .... it is in the post-read where the verification of written zeros is performed. That takes the additional time.
Thanks for confirming.
-
Gotcha, thanks guys.
-
They all look great. Enjoy your server.
Is it normal for the Post Read on all his drives to be nearly half the Preread and Zeroing speeds?
-
I've never used a Seagate drive in the server, do these results from a 4TB NAS drive look Ok?

ETA: Just saw there's a dedicated results thread.

Check out Dynamix, Bonienl's new web gui. Add-ins include cache-dirs

I already use unMENU and its package manager, will they work well together?
-
Can this be installed as a plugin or only as a GO-launched script?
-
I know the script has nothing to do with the WebGUI, it's just a script I was hoping you'd have seen this before and had an idea of what might be causing the speed to be reported incorrectly. In any case, it's just as easy to log into the server and stare at the CLI.
But, it's on its second cycle and the speed is looking correct for step 2.
