  1. I've had to reboot the router once before to get the internet running again, but another time I just waited a few minutes after the transfer was complete and the internet came back up. About 3 weeks ago I reset the router to factory defaults and upgraded the firmware (I checked the manufacturer's website, downloaded and flashed the new firmware). After that I set the router up as if it were brand new and everything seemed to work fine. Then about a week ago when I went to transfer some files to the server, the issue cropped back up.
  2. I'll try the simplified network setup this weekend and try to replicate the problems. Maybe this can help me isolate any problems in the network. I'm starting to wonder if the issue isn't caused by the switch, I didn't seem to have any of these issues until I bought the switch about a month ago. Hypothetical: could there be a conflict between the router and switch that is causing the traffic to bottleneck and cut the internet? For the record, I am using Cat6 cables from modem to router, Cat6 from router to switch and I think it's a Cat5e from switch to server. I actually ordered the cables from monoprice all of 3 months ago and they work great. I'll switch them out during my tests to find out if they may be the problem. The speed seems to be fine when I transfer files, it's just that whenever I do transfer files from the PC to the server, the internet cuts out on both my PC's. Strange. I'll let you guys know what I find out this weekend.
  3. OK, so I have noticed that my internet connection occasionally drops when transferring files from my PC to my unRAID server. I don’t know where to get started, so hopefully the community can give me some ideas – also why I am posting this in the lounge and not the main unRAID boards. This is what I know and/or believe is occurring: It’s not an ISP/modem issue because it doesn’t happen any other time. It typically occurs when two PC’s are on the internet and the transfer is occurring (both PC’s are on Win 7 64-bit and I use Teracopy to transfer and test the files. Both PC’s are connected to the network wirelessly. I am using a D-Link DIR-655 router and I have a TRENDnet TEG-S80G switch (which the server is plugged into). I still have local access on the network, but the internet drops out. In a separate but somewhat related issue, when I connect to the router (or switch) by ethernet cable, I don’t have internet access at all and at times I have difficulty connecting to the unRAID server. I have reset my router once to factory settings and it fixed the issues for a short time, but they are coming back (and I haven’t changed anything since then). I have also updated the firmware on the router to the latest version. Has anyone had any similar issues or does anyone know where I could look for more help. Any suggestions would be helpful as I troubleshoot this. It’s a pain that the internet goes out every time I try to add files to the server (my wife is absolutely thrilled when the internet goes out). Thanks!
  4. I'm not sure that is true. Even though the data transfer to magnetic disk cannot achieve a sustainable 6Gb/s, I would hope that two SATA3 devices would be able to reach 6Gb/s on the cable between them. I'll give you that, I should have worded my sentence better. I was alluding to the point you made about the data transfer rates, but I didn't really do a good job at making that part clear.
  5. If you do some searching, you'll find that some people say that SATA I, II or III are marketing ploys. Maybe there is some truth to this, I don't know, but supposedly, they are really all the same. We discussed this a little bit in this thread. I use SATA I cables in my unRAID built that I bought from MonoPrice and they work fine. From what I understand, most hard drives do not write at speeds that a SATA III cable is rated at anyways, so at this point it doesn't make much of a difference what cable you were to use.
  6. Sorry, I've been gone for a while since I last posted. As it turns out, the files were eventually removed after the system was inactive for a few hours. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the files seemed to be nothing more than the residual of the deleted file as it was in the process of being removed from the hard drive. The link that mbryanr posted described the situation perfectly. I ignored the file for a while and it was gone when I came back. No big deal, I was freaking out for no reason. Thanks for everyone's help!
  7. If you do use the Norco SS-500, make sure you get non-latching SATA cables. The latching cables do not fit well with the Norco cages. I ordered the 18 inch SATA cables from Monoprice and they worked great. I should note that I have the Norco SS-500 cages myself, however I have a different mobo and case. The generic SATA cables work very well for me.
  8. Okay, so I tried moving a movie via terracopy to my unRAID server and during the first two attempts, the transfer failed, in fact my Windows 7 PC actually froze during both processes. After the second attempt, a new file appeared on the unRAID server in the folder I was trying to copy the movie to. The name of the file was originally .fuse_hidden000000bb00000001 but I deleted this using the rm function via telnet. The file came back instantly as .fuse_hidden000000bb00000002. I deleted this again using the rm function, and it showed up one more time as .fuse_hidden000000bb00000003. I haven't attempted to delete this file yet, because my attempts have been in vain to this point. Also, I should note that on the third attempt, the transfer was successful and the movie currently resides in the correct file with this mysterious file type. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions I could try to remove this file. Windows and unMENU report this file as being about 4 gigs, so I'd like to get this off the system to keep it from eating up space. Thanks for any ideas!
  9. I just wanted to follow-up and say that I purchased these SATA cables from MonoPrice and they have worked great. I don't have the speed numbers in front of me (that's something I can get later when I'm off of work), but I'm completely satisfied with them in my server. So, if anyone needs new non-locking SATA cables, I can recommend these because I use them in my server and they work well. (So after posting this, can I get commission from MonoPrice for pushing their products?)
  10. OK, so I've completed one preclear cycle and everything seems fine. There were no sectors reallocated (or the like). The drive temps started at 25/26C and ended at 26/27C. I started a 2nd cycle just now and the drive temps are 29/30C, does this seem about right for 3 WD20EARS drives? I've seen many drives range from 25C - 30C, but does it make a difference that the drives seemed to get warmer 5 hours after the first preclear ended? I have 2 stock case fans and the stock fan on the NORCO cage (and I believe my cables are well managed so airflow should be a big issue). Thanks for any feedback!
  11. It doesn't take much to convince me, I'm good with doing 2 preclears and I'll see how long the first on takes and I'll figure out if I have time for a 3rd preclear. I was really hoping to have the drives ready to be put into the array on Saturday, when I'll have time to work on this. But I'd rather be safe than sorry. Subsequent cycles are an attempt to get past the early part of the "bathtub curve" where disks fail in their first few days of service. Before they hold your data. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathtub_curve Joe L., I had never heard of the bathtub curve before. I guess it's true, you learn something new everyday. As mentioned above, I'll do at least 2 preclears and hopefully I'll have time to fit in a 3rd. Thanks everyone for the input - I think I might actually understand what I'm doing now.
  12. What's the benefit of doing more than one preclear? For instance, if I preclear a drive once and the results are perfect (hypothetically speaking), what would preclearing a second time prove? I suppose it gives you a peace of mind that the first results are verified, but does it do anything else? I can totally understand preclearing a drive multiple times if there are errors or changes in values. In my case, I'm going to wait till I get the results (tonight) before I decide to start another preclear cycle. I'm not against preclearing a 2nd time as prostuff1 suggested, but I'm also impatient, so doing preclearing more than that might be difficult for me. Any other thoughts on this? Thanks again!
  13. That's great news. I've been absolutely thrilled with the parts I've ordered. I used Raj's prototype thread as the basis for my build. As this was my first unRAID build, I have to say, it went very smoothly. I have no doubt you'll love your hardware, good luck!
  14. I'm new to unRAID and preclear. I just started 1 cycle of preclearing last night on 3 WD20EARS drives. I'm using unRAID 4.7 and preclear 1.9. What is the suggested number of cycles I should preclear a drive? I've seen multiple answers ranging from 2-3 (and more) preclears before using the drive in an array. Somewhere I think I saw that after 1 successful preclear pass, I should follow-up with 2 continuous cycles of preclear. I'm not quite sure how many cycles I should run. Maybe the answer is more simple in that I only need to run 1 cycle of preclear (I doubt this, but I would appreciate the community's feedback). I really have no idea, can someone help me out? Thanks!
  15. Last night I received the last of the parts I ordered and I put the whole system together. I'll have to post pictures in the UCD forum when I get some time. Right now the drives are preclearing. Hopefully by the weekend I can be completely up and running!
