  1. I dont use Unraid or Virt manager right now, but i just native Qemu on Linux, i find out that its more universal and easier to debug. Its line from sh Qemu starting script.

If is something working with Unraid its should work on Linux +QEMU and vice versa in 99% of cases.. Only main difference is syntax - sh script vs xml file.

This is good place to start with Qemu on Linux:

  2. For it not needed nothing special, i passed it through by same way as PCI-E devices.

Device is busy - could mean that card is still used by main OS, check if is really using vfio kernel driver by:

    lspci -knv

Otherwise im using simple passthrough line:

    -device vfio-pci,host=04:01.0,x-vga=on

For me rom bios file is not needed. I suppose that you are emulation i440 chipset, not q35.

Here is list which card i made working and which not:

I would say that there is not good explanation why some cards are not working in some situations, there have to be some bugs.

Otherwise nGlide si working quite nice even on Win 98x so cant can 3dfx stuff on Nvidia cards too, its working well.

  3. Hello,

i wonder if someone managed to get working old Ati videocards pass through with KVM? Im using Qemu 4.2.

I managed to get working almost other else Win98 ready 3D videocards  PCI/PCI-e videocards from Nvidia, Matrox, 3dfx on GB Z170 MB with PCI slot but i never was successful with ATI  PCI/PCIE-e ones.

I have tried so far (card name - problem ) :
ATI Mach 64 PCI - videocard - machine start segfault
ATI Rage XL PCI - videocard - machine start segfault

ATI X700 PCI-E - videocard - machine started, completely broken picture from boot.. and only on Analog D-SUB output, DVI is dead
ATI X800 XL PCI-E - videocard - machine started, completely broken picture from boot.. and only on Analog D-SUB output, DVI is dead

I also wonder is someone able to download these cards vbios roms, from some Linux or Windows tool.. i tried some Linux rom parser utility for Linux from Proxmox site (its working fine for old Nvidia cards) and GPU-Z on modern Windows 7, but i want lucky.

  4. Im trying make it working with Vanilla KVM on Mint 19.3 - its using Qemu 2.11 - i would probably need to upgraded it to newer no distro repository version.

Because it seems that PS/2 mouse emulation is dead with 2.11 , at least for Qemu 4.2 on Windows is mouse for dost working fine.

I have Geforce 6600 pci-e pass through working, it would be nice card to run Win98 with full 3D Apis.

I wonder what machine types was at the end used?

I tried to add RTL8139 and other network card, but i they were never detected inside of virtual, i only managed to find NE2k_isa, through Add new Hardware wizzard.

Other problem is input for Passthrough, im used to my virtual machine use USB devices passthrough, but with Qemu Windows 98 its seems that USB is dead, how control such machine?

  5. Msdos.sys is just text file, so you can post whole its content, i personally dont have this step by step problem..  But i have problem, if something crash, i boot into Safe mode and in same mode USB keyboard and mice is not working, so i have to double reboot, is some crash happens and its annoying..

I thing that this should be fixed on QEMU - side, make PS2 working for safe mode as fallback, if USB is not working..

KVM isn't Vmware, and isn't authored by limetech, so you need to be complaining to the KVM authors.

This classic Linux community excuse, Limetech want money for Unraid where is KVM virtualization included, so they should make their best, i dont like halfass features in any product.

To be clear, you are asking for a rarely used combination of emulated sound being passed to the host. Normally, if you want sound in a KVM machine, you would pass through a video and audio card to the VM, which works perfectly well right now in unraid on KVM supported hardware.

Its not rare all virtual machines engines like Vmware, Virtualbox, all emulators works like that, QEMU and KVM even has all these features, but Unraid developers not support them.. Posibility of choice is best thing in the life and choose that i want to use emulated sound card, instead of slots of full of soundcards for passthrough, especially if new soundcards could be passthrough to old OS (no drivers and na PCI slots on present day boards).

Unraid is a NAS with KVM added on. NAS's don't need sound, so unraid doesn't have sound drivers. Unraid is not Vmware, maybe it serve you better to use something that works the way you are used to.

I discovered unraid, because of KVM gaming and Linus tech tips is best solution for retro gaming, which i know, this is marked where is Unraid #1 solution, there is zillion of Nas solutions, so gaming and sound emulation should be priority.

     Try .   <sound model='ac97'/>

then use this driver for 98  https://www.dropbox.com/s/qogbpr96bqp8jvh/WDM_A400.exe.zip?dl=0

However using emulated sound card will not give you sound you can hear in the VM. I passed through an old PCI soundcard i got from eBay for my 98/95 VMs

Why i can hear it from my physical speakers? Its quite usual that emulated sound from emulator is forwarded to physical speakers..Vmware vms could do that.

Why? Inside the VM you'd be able to access the disk using SMB. Since it is local to the same machine, it is quite fast.

But if you really needed to pass it through this would not be the place to ask. Check out SpaceInvader One's (on youtube) videos on passthrough. I know you can pass through a SATA controller and pass the disk through that way. Not sure if you can just pass through a single disk.

Its for gaming, i have lots bad experiences with network shares for gaming disc, local device is everytime better.

  10. Hmm, i have tried todays W98SE, sound card emulation, only working driver i have found for AC97, but not sound from speakers, i have tested Windows 7 with HD audio and again same problem, but through Teamviewer i can check that sound is working, so maybe whole Unraid sound emulation is not wokring, only sound pass through is working.

I would not be surprised to find that your host CPU is just too fast for it. Also, an entire 512MB of RAM? I would not think of putting much more than 32MB or 64MB in a Windows 98 SE machine.

256 MB RAM is safe for installation, after that it could be adjusted to 512, + there some unofficial patches for more.

  12. What about network is there some NetKVM driver, or you need PCI Lan card? Because i would also need PCI audio and PCI GPU and i have only 2 PCI slots, so make net working without additional card would be nice.

Step by step boot, which setting need to be enabled and disable for boot? My guest is that problem would ve vnc video driver. Did you tested it with PCI GPU passthrough? I was enable to boot into safe mode with IGP used, but there is not Win98x driver for IntelHD 200, i far as i know.
