Thanks for the help mrow. My DNS IP was wrong and that was the problem. I looked at my router for the DNS IP it was using and put that into the unRAID Network settings. After updating (with no reboot), I'm sending mail again.

If you're using a static IP, make sure you have your DNS IP address correct on the unRAID machine. I didn't and that would cause ssmtp to hang and ultimately not connect.

I think you're on to something. I have my tower set to have a static IP. Here's my config: I got a new router a few months back. When I look at the settings in the router, it's gets it's DNS Address "Get Automatically From ISP". The address there is not a local IP like I'm used to seeing. The router shows the current DNS IP it's using. A quick google check shows them to be Comcast's DN servers. I think I'll update my network.cfg and try again. I'm doing a preclear now though, so I can't reboot. Is a reboot required for changes to network.cfg to be picked up?

Guys, sorry for another "I'm having trouble with mail thread", but I am. :'( I recently switch from Verizon DSL to Comcast cable. I'm trying to configure SMTP on my unRAID box. I've tried all kinds of combos, but everything I try results in this: root@Tower:/usr/local/etc/ssmtp# echo -e "Subject: unRAID\n\n Test from EJH." | ssmtp -d root ssmtp: Cannot open smtp.comcast.net:25 Any ideas? Does that message mean it can't find the outgoing mail server or that it can't use it? I use Outlook on my WinXP machine to read my mail and it's set up to use port 25.

I've been running unRAID for a while now. I've always accessed my shares from the Windows 7 "Network" window. There I see all my disks, flash, and user shares listed when I click on "Tower". Yesterday I had a power failure (server is on a UPS, but I don't have communication SW yet) while the server was doing a parity sync. The server is back up, a parity check/sync was done and all is fine. However the server "Tower" is no longer showing up in my Network tab in Windows 7. From the same W7 machine I can use firefox to get to http://tower. I can telnet into Tower from the W7 machine as well. I'm thinking this is some sort of Samba issue, but where? On the Windows side or the unRAID side? Both machines are in the same Windows "Workgroup". I'm also able to mount a network drive in W7 to one of my shares with no problems. I've rebooted both machines several times. Any ideas how to get Tower to show up under Network again?

Read only error went away after I powered down the server and ran chkdsk on the flash drive. Rebooted and it's working again. I've moved my flash drive from a USB port on the front of the tower to a usb port right on the mobo. See if this stops these file system problems.

So I went to copy my back up to the flash drive and Windows warned me that each file was already there. So, skipped the copy and did a reboot (via shutdown -r now). When unRAID came back up, it started a parity sync. However, everything was back to normal. Except...I can't write to the /boot directory. I had this problem before and I had to powerdown and use Windows to clean up bad sectors on the flash drive. I'll do that after the parity check ends.

I was writing a script to move files and the file didn't do what it was supposed to. It created a file in the current directory with a "*" in it. I quickly "rm" the file and now /boot directory is gone. I'm not sure what else is gone. When I look at the flash drive from windows, it's empty. What should I do? How do I recover. Please help this dummy. EDIT: I do have a back up of the flash drive on my Windows PC. Can I just copy that to the flash drive and reboot? I don't want to lose all my media though. Right now that looks fine.

Thanks for the help. I ran chkdsk from the Properties->Tools->Check Now button in Windows 7. I turned on both check boxes and ran it. It definitely found some issues and fixed them. When I put the flash drive back in the unRAID box, it booted fine. However, I noticed some issues in the unmenu screens. So, I ran unmenu_install -u and rebooted again. This time it looked good. I've been slowly getting up to speed with unRAID. My recent addition is adding sleep/wake support. I found the topic in the How To section of the wiki. While going through the tutorial, I wanted to copy my s3.sh file to /boot/custom/bin. I went to the /boot directory and did: mkdir custom which seemed to work. Then I did: cd custom mkdir bin and got an I/O error. I then started noticing issues with my config dir (it was empty) and decided to reboot (shutdown -r now). Upon reboot, things looked better, but now I can't write to the flash drive at all. What did I screw up? Am I not supposed to edit the /boot directory while the array is active? I've attached my syslog to this post. It's pretty clear in the syslog that it's unhappy with my file system. I just can't tell why. syslog.txt

I contacted NewEgg.com about returning my Corsair 430 power supply, but I couldn't return it to them because I had already cut off the UPC from the packaging for a rebate that was about to expire. So I had to deal with Corsair directly. I submitted the request for the RMA on their web site and within an hour the RMA had been approved and I was sent instructions on how to return the PS. I sent in the PS via UPS which cost me $15. I wasn't happy that I had to pay to return something that was defective, so I called Corsair. Their customer service agent instantly offered to send me a pre-paid UPS label, but I explained that I had already sent it back. I suggested that maybe they could upgrade the PS they send back. He agreed and they are sending me the CX-500 and they shipped it immediately (instead of waiting for the original to arrive at their address). I have to say Corsair's customer service was excellent. Also, as a lesson, don't just take what's in the instructions for returning something. I should have called immediately to question me paying to send back the PS. I'll update the thread when I get the new PS installed.

It sure sounds like it. It's really hard to pin point it though, even with the side of the case off. So I guess I should RMA the PS and try a new one. Thanks for the help Shawn.

Shawn, thanks for the idea. Here's what I did: I turned off the PS switch. Disconnected the mains from the mobo. Turned the PS switch back on. Ringing stopped. I connected the mains back to the mobo and the ringing resumed. So, what's that mean? The PS is bad?

I just went down and listened to mine again. My noise a high pitched ringing, not really a beep. Is that what yours sounds like too? Sorry, I know this is hard, but I'm a little worried about the noise. I'm not sure if it's the PS or the mobo making the noise.

Nugz, Couple questions for you. First, I like how you labeled your HDDs, but what are the numbers on the label (ie - 5188 Parity)? Second question is about the "whine" you're hearing. I just built a 3 HDD server with that same PS. When I turn off the server, I hear a faint ringing or beeping. Sort of like a digital watch alarm. Is this what you're hearing?

Another step complete! All three hard drives are precleared. Tomorrow I hope to get to setting up the array. One question, I just shutdown the server and I'm hearing a faint beeping noise coming from the server. Sounds almost like a digital watch alarm, but very faint. I turned off the power supply and the beeping stopped. Turning the power back on made the beeping turn to a faint ringing. When the server is running I don't hear the beeping/ringing, but that might be because of all the fans/hdds running. Any ideas on what the noise is? Could it be something on the mobo?

FIXED (I hope). Through google and reading up on ssmtp it seemed like I needed a revaliases file (which I see an example of in the ssmtp package). Found another thread on this forum of another unRaid user have similar troubles. See http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=10200.0 for details on fix.

Thanks for the reply prostuff. I kicked off 3 preclears using the Configuration Tutorial instructions. I had three screen sessions running. However, my first one seems to have gone away. It also appears that my first preclear isn't running anymore. I seriously doubt it could have finished as my other 2 are only one step 2 of 10. I looked in my syslog and don't see any preclear lines. Is it safe for me to just try and run preclear again on the HDD?

So I've got my server built and I'm going through the Configuration Guide in the wiki (thank God for that guide!). I'm about to start pre-clearing my drives and I know my WDs are AF drives, but what about the 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 I'm using? Is that an AF drive too? If so, that means all my drives should be 4k aligned, right?

Hi, just getting my new server up and running and having trouble with the smtp package in unMenu. I'm using verizon email and here are my values in the configuration values: [email protected] outgoing.verizon.net:587 NO id (no @verizon.net) pwd [email protected] (tried localhost and got errors) YES blank The problem seems to be with my Mail Domain. The email test results in: ssmtp: 550 5.7.1 Invalid mail address <root@[email protected]> If I drop the "id@" from the Mail Domain, I get the same error message, but the email address listed is just [email protected]. When I tried localhost for the Mail Domain I got this error: ssmtp: 550 5.7.1 Use fully qualified domain name Thanks in advance for the help.

Try your board out first and see how it goes. I run a Gigabyte EP43-UD3L with the Realtek 8111C NIC and I have not had a problem with mine. Ok, so try out my build and hope for the best. I'll keep this issue in mind if I have troubles. Thanks.

So what's the consensus with this issue? I'm building my first unRAID system and the mobo has a 8111C. I was planning on using 4.7 as I have AF drives to use. Am I stuck buying a Intel NIC?

Thanks again Raj. I thought of a few more newb questions. 1) The icydock has 2 molex power plugs, do I need to attach both to the power supply? Or is the second for a optional redundant PS? 2) Also, the icydock has other connectors (no, not the sata connector), what are those for? They seem to be communication connectors for when the HDD fail. 3) When installing the power supply, does the fan face inside the case or out? I thought I read either, but dependent on the scenario.

So all my parts have arrived and I'm going to start to put this puppy together. Couple things I still need to get. 1) More SATA cables. I have enough to start, but I need more. Monoprice here I come. I guess 18" are the usual length people get? 2) One of the USB header adapters so I can mount my flash drive inside the case. Really wish I had gotten this with all my other NewEgg stuff. I also wanted to mention something. Compared to all the experts here, I'm very green to building PCs. I built one before this one. Anyway, I noticed that the Biostar A760G is a AM2+ mobo and the Sempron is a AM3 socket CPU. From the reading I've done, they should be compatible (and why would Raj list them in the budget box if they weren't ). But it is a little confusing at first. Did anybody have to update the Biostar BIOS before actually running unRAID? Ed
