  1. basically title says it all. log file fills up in an hour or so. any help is much appreciated homenas-diagnostics-20211107-2253.zip
  2. I'm using VNC and I've tried it on my laptop and using a passed through keyboard on the server and nothing seems to do it. Super odd. My only thought is that I might have done some editing or changes to the OVMF_VARS and OVMF_CODE files when following your tutorial for the nvme passthrough of windows vm. I just don't remember what those changes where, or if that would even have an effect. I'll go back and rewatch that video now.
  3. @gridrunner thanks for another awesome vid! I'm having a hell of a time getting this working though. Basically for some reason my VMs won't let me enter the OVMF bios when I restart the VM. Basically when I'm mashing the delete key I'll see the TianoCore logo then it will just continue on to Clover as if I didn't press anything. I have no idea why that might be, but it means I can't change the resolution, so any time I try to boot all I get is the apple logo then it gets super distorted and crashes. Any thoughts?
  4. @gridrunner I do have the logo 'issue' but everything else runs just fine, so seems like it's just an oddity. and to answer my own question from earlier about not needing to change boot order every time you start the vm...I figured out you just need to remove the other boot options in the xml. So remove the vdisk, driver iso file, any dvdrom ect that were booting before your nvme drive and it'll go straight to the only thing left.
  5. @billington.mark Thanks for the great tip on your passthrough technique. I got it working, but for some reason I need to edit the boot order every time the VM restarts. Is that expected or is there a way to ensure that boot order stays the same?
  6. @gridrunner Yea it is super weird. I followed the tutorial to the T, converting a working vdisk using the easeus todo software, then formatting the leftover partition with unassigned devices. On the grey screen there are no machines to boot from, just the clover icon. the VM is also ovmf. I'm going to start fresh from the begining and try it again. I think my issue may have been the formatting of the disk going into the whole process. I'm going to try to do again it by formatting it with unassigned devices and not giving it any fs/partitions (it may have had a single partition going into the process). currently it's showing the file systems types in unassigned devices for those windows partitions that the software made, and I saw that it wasn't showing those in your video.
  7. Hey Gridrunner, First off thanks for the videos, they are super helpful and very relevant to things I'm interested in doing. I've tried your tutorial out, as it's something I've been trying to solve constantly for the last few weeks. I am getting stuck hover on the clover bootloader piece. I tried using your clover img file to boot windows directly from my nvme disk, but it seems like there is some problem with that file for me, as it only loads to a grey screen that says clover boot manager, and no further. I started to dive down the road of building my own boot loader with the clover configurator, but quickly turned back as that program is daunting and somewhat out of my league at the moment. any suggestions on ways to get windows to load fully, or why i might be running into this issue in the first place?
  8. Hi ich777, So after running into the same problem and pulling my hair our for more than a few days with about 100 different configurations I think I figured out what's going on. It looks like its a problem with the way the SSDs are made, and how much actually 'fast' (SLC) memory they have vs the slower (TLC) memory. I've got an OCZ Trion 150 500GB, and it looks like there is ~7GB of SLC memory on there which moves at around 400-500MB/s. After that 7GB it drops down to HDD speeds of around 70-80MB/s. This is rather pitiful in my opinion. It wasn't a problem until i started downloading bluRays via sonarr/sabnzb and my entire system would lock up whenever they were unpacking/moving. As to why it 'locks up' and makes unraid unresponsive I couldn't tell you, but I'm almost certain this is the cause of our troubles. Let me know if that makes sense for you and if you come to a solution. JonP, any idea why a really slow cache drive would lock things up? Here is an article from pcworld about the exact issue: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2947864/storage/ocz-trion-100-review-an-affordable-ssd-with-a-problem.html
  9. Wow this is all great info. Thanks a ton for the tips...time to make some decisions!
  10. At the moment and for the foreseeable future it would be at maximum 2 streams (usually only one) and nothing I have is higher than 1080p since I don't have any screens that are higher than 1080p. Usually it's 720 just to save on disk space and since I can't tell the difference with a lot of the content I watch (animated stuff and older tv shows). I'm usually watching it on either my macbook pro (yes i know i can just watch it from the files, but I like the plex ui), or my ps4. Do you know if the Avaton CPU be replaced/upgraded down the line or is it soldered to the board?
  11. - yes I will be doing transcoding. and good call with the onboard video. in reality i can probably run this system headless most of the time. I do like this idea and I'd never come across this kind of system before. I'll need to look into it further, but thanks for the suggestion, seems like a reasonable option.
  12. So I came here by way of Linus as many others have. I built an over powered rig that I'm using for content creation (photo, video, sometimes audio) and gaming, and am not upset by performance by any means, but for a few reasons want to separate out my NAS from my main rig. Reasons are as follows: 1. Power consumption - I want to leave the nas on all the time and not worry about how much power it's pulling and how much heat i'm creating. 2. I really want 100% of the power from the machine I put together. for as much money as I spent, I don't want to virtualize my os. I know often the speed loss is negligible but I just don't want to waste any overhead. 3. I don't want my high-end rig on all the time, which is something i do want from a nas. 4. There are probably other reasons, but it's too late and I can't think. In terms of the new rig I will want: 1. Basic file server capabilities (duh) 2. To run plex 3. To run crashplan 4. To run sabnzbd and sonarr 5. probably running on z170 platform - but open to other suggestions 6. keep costs low - hoping to spend only a few hundred. (already have case and gpu) 7. keep power consumption low 8. not seeing a need for virtualized os's but i'm not completely counting it out I was looking at the G4400 but not sure that'll be enough. Any suggestions would be helpful as I'm really not set in any direction or platform.
