I do have to say that video passthrough is an extremely valuable adjunct to VM utility, and I personally would give up cores and/or pay a premium for this capability.

You might want to think through the use cases you'd be giving up.

Of course the hope is that the Ryzen NPT issue is overcome, but at this point there are no guarantees. I have a hard time recommending it at this time.

I'm not planning to use a monitor on the server, after initial setup I intend for the server to be headless. VMs will only be accessed remotely from other devices.

My current server (HP Microserver N54L) is completely headless and this is how I access the VMs. I assume the same can be done with unRaid?

I have separate Gaming PC's and HTPC so the server won't need to perform any of those sort of roles that require video pass-through.

I have a similar build... main issue prior to the latest UEFI / BIOS updates was the need to disable C-State in UEFI / BIOS.  Update to 0810 and you should be stable... I've been stable for a couple of weeks now.

Great to hear! Hopefully those weeks turn into months and years :)

Still not sure it will be a walk in the park, but with some effort I believe you will have a positive outcome.

Excellent thank you, I am going to pull the trigger and buy the system this month.

If I face any issues I am sure I will be a frequent face here haha

  3. Hi all,
I made a build thread here for my upcoming Ryzen build, but a comment mentioned Ryzen has its issues and I may be best to ask in this thread. Does anyone anticipate me having any issues with the below?

I will NOT be passing through GPU to VM's, GPU is simply there because I thought it might assist with initial setup.

My understanding is that as long as I use unRaid v6.4rc7 I should be okay?

    Case: Fractal Design Define R5
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600
    Motherboard: Asus Prime x370 Pro
    RAM: G.Skill Fortis 16GB 2400 (2x8GB) Ryzen DDR4

GPU: Radeon HD 5450 (already own)
    HDD 1: Seagate Ironwolf 8TB
    HDD 2: Seagate Ironwolf 4TB
HDD 3-6: 4x WD Red 3TB (already own)
    SSD: Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 250GB
    PSU: SilverStone Strider Gold 550W

    Appreciate the help.

Read the ryzen threads before deciding to commit to this. It's not 100% plug and play.

From having a quick read over at the Anybody planning a Ryzen build? thread, it appears the main issue is GPU pass through to VMs. Is that correct? I am not planning on having any GPU pass through. I actually wasn't intending to use a GPU at all but thought I may need it to assist with initial setup and then thought I might need it to boot etc.

Looks like as long as I use unRaid v6.4rc7 I should be okay.

Maybe I should post my build to that thread and see if they identify any issues?

  5. Hi everyone!

I need a new home server/NAS and have come up with the following build below.

I have built several PCs however this will be my first time using unRaid.

Looking for it to be reviewed before I purchase to make sure there is no noticeable issues or flaws, also have a couple questions at the bottom.

    Storage

    • 1x 250GB - Cache Drive
    • 1x 8TB HDD - Parity Drive
    • 4x 3TB HDD - Data Drives (already own)
    • 3x 4TB HDD - Data Drives

    Purpose
The NAS will run the following applications/roles/Docker containers:

    • Media Storage
    • 1x Virtual Machine (Windows)
    • 1x Virtual Machine (Linux Mint)
    • Kodi Headless
    • Emby (Transcode 2-3 1080p streams)
    • MariaDB
    • PHPMyAdmin
    • Sonarr
    • Radarr
    • Sabnzbd
    • Transmission
    • Wordpress
    • PiHole
    • UniFi Controller

    Parts List:

Note: HDDs 7+8 are not included as they will be purchased separately later in the year.

    Prices are Australian Dollars (AUD).
    Case: Fractal Design Define R5 - $165
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 - $289
    Motherboard: Asus Prime x370 Pro - $229
    RAM: G.Skill Fortis 16GB 2400 (2x8GB) Ryzen DDR4 - $199

GPU: Radeon HD 5450 - Already own
    HDD 1: Seagate Ironwolf 8TB - $415
    HDD 2: Seagate Ironwolf 4TB - $209
    HDD 3-6: 4x WD Red 3TB - Already own
    SSD: Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 250GB - $185
    PSU: SilverStone Strider Gold 550W - $129
    OS: Unraid - $89

    Total: $1,909

    Questions:

    1. I have read that the 8TB do not mount in the Drive Cages of the Node 804 properly. Does anyone know if the R5 has the same problem?
    2. The motherboard does not say using the NVME M.2 SSD Port will disable any of the 8x SATA 3 ports. Can anyone confirm if this is true? If so I have the perfect amount of slots.
    3. Do I need the GPU after initial setup?
    4. Any issues or noticeable flaws that stand out to anyone?

    Thank you for your help!

One issue is with the hdd's and the hdd bracket in the Node 804. Seagate doesn't have the middle screw position on the IronWolf drives. I can only attach the drives using the top screw hole and so the drives are kinda dangling in there. I'll need to figure out how to secure them properly, even though the case isn't gonna get removed from the tv cabinet. Hopefully we won't have any earthquakes in the meantime :D

That sucks about the Node 804 HDD screw positions. I was hoping that would be something they have resolved by now, it's one of the things holding me back from doing a new unraid build with 8TB HDDs
