  1. ok now it seems to be working. i put the normal power button back on, powered up and then shut down using the power supply switch. then i removed the power switch and now it turns on using the power supply switch. but one thing i thought of is that when i am powered up and looking at the console, if i press the regular power button, it unmounts the drives and what not and properly shuts down. when i turn it off using the power supply switch it obviously just kills power without proper shutdown. is that going to hurt anything?
  2. ok i got it. i was pressing + and - to change the values and there was no disabled option. but if you press enter it pops up more options and then i jus scrolled down to disabled using the arrow keys. working like a champ now.
  3. thanks for the suggestion... i just tried it though and it still didnt work. after changing the bios setting andthen shutting down and putting the jumper on the power switch pins, i had the same result. i turn on the power supply, everythgin spins up and i get a beep andthen it shits down. any other suggestions? it seems like i ought to be able to do this
  4. i really would like to do it this way but when i put a jumper on the power switch pins i get the problem i described above (starts to boot then shuts off) but if i attach the awitch, and use that it seems to work fine. is there a bios settign or somethgin i need to change to allow me to just put a jumper on the power switch pins and have it work? btw i have the asus P5PE-VM mobo.
  5. in the settings listed above it says the following: Boot Boot Device Priority 1st Boot Device [sandisk U3 Cruzer] 2nd Boot Device [Disabled] i have my 1st boot device set to my sony stick, but the 2ndand 3rd boot devices are set to my other hard drives, there seems to be no way to sed 2nd and 3rd boot device to Disabled. how do i do that?
  6. also one other question. right now i just have a single 250 watt power supply see link below for details. and right now i have 2 sata drives in the system. at what point should i get the second power supply? how many drives shoudl be hooked toeach power supply? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104931
  7. wow - really good thinking. I just gave it a try (jumper on the power sw pins, and removed the stuff from the top bay), but when i turn on the power supply, the ligtsh go on, the fans spin up just like normal and i get a single normal soundign beep from the system speaker and then it shuts completely down. all the while no output at all to the screen ... any thoughts?
  8. ok so i just got all my parts this afternoon. i got the mobo mounted int he stacker case and just started sliding in the drives. the first thing that i noticed that could be a problem is that all the new stacker cases (at least the ones available on newegg) have the top drive bay taken up by a bunch of usb ports and the power and reset buttons. if i take this out of the top slot then how will i turn the system on and off? and if i don't take it out, how do i fit 12 drives in it? and also if you look at the following link you can see that in bays 2-4 is a cage containing a fan. i was able to remove that but it seems like an odd spot for it. thoughts?
  9. yea thats what i am afraid of - i have done only a little with linux so i would be reluctant to get into this. what a shame. i guess i just have to wait until he officially releases the sata version.
  10. hmm - seems like it might still be a bit too beta for me. thats a real bummer because the unRAID looks like a great solution but until they come out with the sata version (out of beta) i guess i will have to wait. is there any eta on when they might release a sata version? and actually i asked over on AVS but nobody replied yet - is it possible to use mu sata drives with the IDE unraid by using some kind of SATA to IDE adapter for the drives?
  11. hey thanks i don't know how i didn't see that before. i am very surprised however to find that newegg does not have the mobo. and zipzoomfly has them but they are on backorder. can anyone suggest another site that carries them and has reliable service like newegg? also what about the whole SATA vs PATA thing? i have about 4 older smaller PATA drives an 2 500GB SATA drives. and moving forward i would like to buy SATA drives. is there a starter kit i can but from lime that includes a SATA controller card and a PATA controller card? OR if i could get a starter kit with all SATA cards, then i could just forget about my old PATA drives and just use my big SATA drives and but some new ones when i get money.
  12. i have been reading up on the unraid solution on avs and now here but there is just so much info to read. i am wondering if there is any official list of supported hardware (mobo, cpu, ram, power supply, RAID controller cards...) i would like to purchase the usb drive with the os and config on it and just build my own system. my problem is though that i have several smaller IDE drives that i could use, but i also have 2 recently purchased 500 GB SATA drives. so is there any way to do a setup that has one IDE RAID controller and one SATA RAID controller?
