  1. Thank you, now its clear to me about the PCI issue
  2. Thank you all for your replies 1) I am conviced - going to buy the AOC controller so in the future have support for 3TB drives By the way - Anyone using the AOC SASLP MV8 on a Abit ab9pro mobo (on the pcie x16 slot) 2) I am going to try to upgrade to 4.7 using your instructions and then to the latest 5 - I will try the clean install of 4.7 3) I understand that PCI bus can hold 1 disk. In my case will have 1 disk of the array. The second disk will be the cache disk So when doing the parity only one disk will be active (the array disk). The only case that 2 disks on the PCI will be active doing something will be the case lets say copying files from the cache disk to the disk on the array which is also on pci bus. I have to mention that in my configuration I have shares like disk1,disk2, disk xxx. About the heating issue: First of all i was wrong - I was using 3 in 2 cages likes these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SNT-SAC2131B-3-x-3-5in-HDD-2-x-5-25in-Bay-Backplane-/330596742458?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf919f53a My unraid server is outside the house (but protected) and when in the summer most of the day (and for 2-3 months) the temperature is 30-35 Celcius (sometimes more) I was experiencing at least 45C sometimes more than 50C The fans on these cages are small and dont anticipate much heat. I have better results using these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cooler-Master-STB-3T4-E3-GP-3-5in-HDD-Module-Converter-/330548443876?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf638fae4 Well, the fans arent the best you can have but its easy to replace them with better ones When my server is totaly ready i will post some shots and also some screenshots showing temperature Thank you Eco
  3. Hi all ! After a couple of years having an unraid server ( 7+1 * 1,5TB and 500GB cache) I decided to move in a better configuration. I had to change the case so I bought a Rebel12 and skip my cages cause they couldn't manage well in my hot (in summer) climate to simple ones (4 in 3) with 12cm fan I also switched my ...no name 600W PSU to a CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX V2 850W. Still have the 1,5TB Seagates and also 6 more 2 TB WD (Green ones) No changes at mobo (Abit AB9Pro), cpu and RAM Also have two Pcie sata x2 controllers and one 4x sata controller at the PCI slot Thats a total of 13 sata on pcie bus and 4 more on the pci 1) Dont have yet a clear thought about what Sata x8 Controller to buy I figured out (correct me if I am wrong) that the BR-10i versions dont support 3TB disks (firmware not available) Seems that that the AOC MV8 PCie version to be the only way but not so clear if it really works with 3TB drives so far (on supported unraid versions) Also AOC is quite expensive compared to the BR-10i - almost double price Is there anyone succesfully running 3TB drives and in what adapter and unraid version ? - or whats your suggestion.... 2) Tried to upgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.7 Copied the files as instructed but still says 4.4.2 !!! - but it works !!! I am thinking of erasing the usb drive and make a clean install of the last version (5 beta xxx) and rearrange my disks the same order as now I have a valid system running and and only one user configuration Will this work or I will loose all my data ? 3) In my final configuration thinking of 20+1 drives +1 cache (pci controller) In case I need to add one more drive -i am thinking adding it int the pci controller - will there be a significant speed loss ? Except i guess the case i transfer data between that particular disk and the cache disk (same pci controller) Thank you in advance Eco
  4. I recently upgraded all my home infrastructure to Gigabit I also got tired from my old unraid build which it takes 12 mb/sec parity check It says that 2000min is needed for a complete check (but of course it takes less) My current configuration is: (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3076.0) Asus TUV4X (Revision 1006 Beta 002 Official Bios) Tualatin 1200Mhz Celeron CPU 512MB RAM 1xPCI vga card 2xSilicon (4xSATA) 1xVia (3xSATA+1PATA) 1xGBit Nic (USR) 5x1,5TB Seagate (one of them as parity) 2x500GB WD 1x120GB WD (cache) I have already bought an Abit AB-9 Pro and i am going to have 9x1,5TB Seagate drives I am going the same tower and PSU (650W) My questions are: a) What cpu i am going to buy ? I want a cpu that will not be a bottleneck but also not a known power hungry/hot cpu Of course price is always a matter Got to mention that i primarily/mostly use my box as a pure unraid box (not extra services running) My first thought is for a INTEL DUAL CORE CELERON E1400 2.0GHZ LGA775 - 800 FSB - BOX in around 45 euro. But this cpu isn't in the cpu compatibility list of my Abit mobo. Anyone with success ? I also present a cpu list with prices that are available to me: INTEL DUAL CORE CELERON E1400 2.0GHZ LGA775 - 800 FSB - BOX 45E INTEL DUAL CORE CELERON E1500 2.2GHZ LGA775 - 800 FSB - BOX 55 INTEL PENTIUM DUAL CORE E2200 2.20GHZ LGA775 - 800 FSB - BOX 60 INTEL PENTIUM DUAL CORE E5200 2.50GHZ LGA775 - 800 FSB - BOX 68 INTEL PENTIUM DUAL CORE E5300 2.60GHZ LGA775 - 800 FSB - BOX 75 INTEL CORE 2 DUO E7300 2.66 GHZ LGA775 - 1066 FSB - TRAY 110 INTEL CORE 2 DUO E7400 2.80 GHZ LGA775 - 1066 FSB - BOX 120 INTEL CORE 2 DUO E7500 2.93 GHZ LGA775 - 1066 FSB - BOX 140 INTEL CORE 2 DUO E8400 3.00 GHZ LGA775 - 1333 FSB - BOX 155 Of course you are welcome to suggest any other cpu compatible with my motherboard b) How much memory? 2GB DDR2 800 is about 20 euro Thinking for 8GB. Will this help in getting the directory/files structure in my drives without spinning up all the time ? Do i have to make some extra scripting for this or its managed by unraid itself ? I also think that unraid uses extra memory for caching files and write/read them at once which is faster and better for the disks. Maybe some special kind of memory (OCZ with heat spreaders) ? c) I am thinking of having a raid 1 for parity disk using the onboard JMicron® JMB363 controller So i am going to have 2 parity disks in case of failure. Is this possible ? Will this be a bottleneck ? Is JMicron® JMB363 the right way ? d) I am thinking of using my cache disk in the 3112 onboard controller. Is this the best choice for speed ? e) Found in ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-eSATA-2-SATA-II-2-0-PCI-E-PCIE-RAID-Express-Card-K35_W0QQitemZ260293771454QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Networking_SM?hash=item260293771454&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318) Would get any benefit buying a couple of them and use them for parity (maybe in raid 1 mode) or cache disk ? (Not thinking for now to expand to more than 9 drives) I know .... a lot of questions I would be happy even i get an answer in a few of them Any ideas for building a better unraid server around this configuration are welcome. Thank you, Dimitrios P.S. Anyone with similar build can post transfer speeds ? Reading large files, writing large files, parity check speed, cache disk speed.....
  5. Thank you for quick reply ! A few more things..... a) used to have a freenas before, in this case you could ftp files (any char set) and they were accessible both ways out of the box Is there a setting i have to change or even a script to make this happen at unraid ? b) I doesn't seem convenient to me that i log on to my unraid ftp as root, uploading files, and right after i am not able to see them. I think i have to chmod every time i upload a single file and thats an (useless) extra step Any ideas how to transfer my music and movies that have greek letters on their filenames and also be both ways accessible ? Thank you, Dimitrios
  6. Hi all !!! Just installed Unraid Pro, enabled a few disks (no parity or cache) to starting moving my data. I enabled user security, changed the pass for the root and nothing else ... Got to tell you that some of my files/directories contain greek letters but i think i am not the only one using unraid and a non latin alphabet In my windows pc (My Network places) i can see Disk1, Disk2, Disk3, etc ... I can also ftp and have the same structure. I started feeding Disk1 from my windows pc using ftp. Here are the results --- In My Network Places and Disk1 there are data but filenames have changed (into non alphabet symbols) --- I also checked the filenames by telnet - also changed .... --- I tried refresh on my ftp client and i can only see folders (not my files) but their names are correct I deleted all data in Disk1 and tried to copy my files using copy paste from windows --- Obvious in My Network Places the filenames are correct --- Filenames are different when i use ls on them (telnet) --- According to my ftp client there are no files in Disk1 I deleted again all data in Disk1, i mapped my Disk1 in my windows pc, i installed an ftp server and I feed Disk1 using ftp in my mapped Disk1 --- In My Network Places filenames are correct --- Using ls filenames are incorrect --- When i ftp in my windows pc mapped Disk1 filenames are correct --- When i ftp to my tower Disk1 is empty Filenames are ok when they dont contain greek letters but the ftp behaviour remains the same ( I hate attributes !!!) Maybe I am doing something wrong but i just wanted to do the simplest thing ftp my existing data from my remote pc to Disk1 and when its full to Disk2 ..... and of course i want them to be accessible from ftp clients and windows sharing Got to tell you that I have already seen NLS's posts and spent a lot of time around looking for a solution I also tried version 4.5beta1 and 4.4 - different disks - different pcs and configurations etc .... I hope that I am the wrong one and I just miss a simple click (somewhere ....) but i am sure that very soon you will respond to me. Thank you in advance, Dimitrios
