  1. Thanks for your feedback. I am current running a WHS and it is getting expensive to mirror all the drives. I am not too familar with configuration of unRaid, but from what I read, it is solid, which is what I want. How do you configure the system for a cache drive. I want to get the best speed possible out of the system. I tend to move large files around a couple of time a week and am impatient. As for your question about the hard drives. I have had zero issue with the hitachi drives. They have been rock solid. I bought the first set of 4 about year ago and no issues. I bought the second 4 about 6 months ago and no issues.
  2. I have selected these components because they are rock solid. I want a build that will give me the least problems when assembling while giving more horepower than I currently need for future proofing. Only thing I do not have are cables and cache hard drive. I will be using 12 of my existing HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117) 2TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drives from my WHS to get me going and add more as needed. Any recommendations on a cache drive and cables? 3. I plan on building or buying a 20 bay unRaid server fairly soon. I am getting specs together for the build and found a supermicro board that hopefully will give me a little future proof. I know it may be a little overkill, but I would rather spend more now than go through the time of upgrading later. The board is a Supermicro C7Q67 iQ67 LGA1155 USB 3.0/SATA 6Gb/s microATX motherboard. I plan on using an i3 low wattage chip with the board along with 4gb or 8gb of ram in a norco 20 bay server. Any issues with using this board or setup? Anyone using it? Any lessons learned that can be applied when setting up this board?
  4. How about paired with this i3 chip? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116394
  5. Anyone ever used this type of board in a 4220 norco case or any other case. I am thinking about using an i3 or i5 chip and 4 or 8gb of ram.
  6. How about something like this? Seems to have everything I need: http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/product.asp?pid=30762
  7. I have about 10TB of data that I wanted to transfer to the unRaid server via USB 3.0 rather than over my network. I thought that would be a faster process. Also, I figured that USB 3.0 is the new standard and I want to build a server that is going to last me 3-5 years, why not build it with the lastest and greatest. As for 6gb/sec speeds. I am not as committed because I know that the HDD I will be using will not have the horsepower to keep up. But again, I figured why not build one that is geared toward a 3-5 year timeline. Can you recommend a good supermicro board that is compatible with one of the low voltage newer intel chips. I was thinking of the i3 or i5 chips?
  8. I am really new at this and have been surfing the threads looking at builds. Price is not as much of a concern as ease and reliability of build. I currently have an HP 495 Media smart server that is gobbling up 2TB hard drives because my storage needs are growing so fast. I will be using the box as a file server with some simple media server technology (running on windows 7) for right now. However I plan on adding new functionality in the future so I want to build something that will allow me to add more functionality without having to upgrade the hardware. My needs are: 1. Fast enough where it will allow me to grow as I add more features to the media server side and windows 7 side. 2. I want an intel based system. Looking at i3 or i5 chip. 3. Reliable and proven setup. I don't want to spend all weekend setting it up. 4. As quiet as possible. 5. Must be able to hold 20 HD. I was looking at Norco 4220 6. USB 3.0 port 7. SATA 3 6gb/sec ports. 8. HDD will be a mix of 2tb green and non-green drives. My budget for the build without HDD (Storage) is limited at $1500. That must include: Board/CPU: Memory: Parity drive: Cache drive 2TB or 3tb: Powersupply: Fans: RAID Card: Case: Cables: Anything else?:
  9. I have looked at the supermicro boards on newegg and do not see any with a USB 3.0 port. Can someone recommend a proven board with USB 3.0 and compatible with intel i3 or i5 chip. I will be using this board in a Norco 4220 case, so I would like it to be have as many SATA ports as possible. Ideally it would even have SATA 6gb/sec ports. While price is always a concern, I have budgeted $300 for a board, which should be more than enough.
  10. Is it possible to have a setup where there are two parity drives, rather than one? I would be willing to have the extra disk, should two disks fail.
  11. I have been mulling the idea of building my own sever or buying one of the pre-bulit lime tech. I have some questions about the 1510. What is the sound output of the fans, drives, power supplie? ie how loud is the server if I had all drives slots filled. How solidly built is the server? Are there any modifications I should have them do? ie faster cpu, more ram, different fan. etc. I will be using this to stream blu-ray movies and audio files throughout my house. I have a library that is growing on a WHS machine and would like to use something that will let me grow faster. Thanks in advance.
