  2. Hi Guys, Level 1 testing complete for this board. See attached Syslog. ton be fair been running it for over 6 months, but problems with some drives (1 & 1.5TB) have caused enormous problems. Have resolved these now and all is good in the world. Based on history i don't expect any problems getting to Level 2 or 3 - purely my time in docuemnting it properly. Any questions fire away. I am aware of the HPA on the Parity drive but so far haven't been able to remove it, but wanted to finally get the level 1 testing done first before trying to fix it. I tried hdparm and it looked good, but it came back with a warning about a flag being missing. I travel alot so haven't had time to relook at it. Paul syslog-2010-03-01-EG45M-DS2H.txt
  3. Update: NIC is exhibiting same behaviour under beta 6 now - must be a flaky nic - might have to try an add on card and see if that fixes it. sorryfor wasting anyones time.
  4. Hi guys, Have just had a rebuild of the hardware of my server, and a funny thing has cropped up. The Server continually drops LAN connection and then reconnects every 15 - 20 secs, I only noticed it was doing it when I saw my Windows PC UPS monitoring software kept loosing communication with the unraid server as it monitors. I was running 4.5 Beta 6 for months, and never had this issue, and have now rolled back to Beta 6 and the problem disappeared immediately, so there appears to be something not liking the NIC (Realtek 8111b). Anyone else had this issue? the board i just moved out of the server ran the 8111c NIC and didn't have the problem, so trhe plot thickens somewhat. The MB isn't validated yet, but so far so good (Gigabyte EX38-DS4 - was lying around gathering dust) but doesn't appear to be a MB issue as Beta 6 is runnign flawlessly.
  5. Joe, thanks for the reply, I'll run those tests and post the results. I'll be a bit slow as I have a hectic few days ahead before i can respond. Moving the parity drive should just be a case of rejigging the cables and then reassigning the drives accordingly in the setup page upon startup? BTW, I read somewhere in my UPS researching travels that you can change the % / time that the server triggers a shutdown by editing the CONF file. I've successfully got a windows machine monitoring the Server UPS (the WIN machine uses a dumb UPS) and have configured that to 30% or 10 minutes. I would like to trigger the server to start shutdown at 25% or 7 minutes just to be on the safe side in regards to battery quality - ie. 3 min / 5% is fine when battery is new but a pretty short time to shutdown when the battery fatigues quickly near the end of its life. I haven't had any luck getting the unraid server to reflect the required changes. Any thing I'm doing wrong? attached is the conf file. thx, Paul
  6. Hi Guys, I have a APC UPS hooked up to my server, and have successfully installed the package, and its showing in unmenu correctly. We had a poweroutage the other day while I was away and for some reason it appears that the server didn't powerdown correctly, so it automatically started a parity check upon reboot. I did read the 3 page post covering this but with little luck. My questions are: 1) currently the UPS is set for 3 minutes or 5% battery remaining which is default - is there any way of changign this to 10% & 6 minutes just to play it safe? 2) The server not powering down properly - how do i check that all the necessary files are installed to allow the server to shut down correctly when it see's the UPS hit its " triggered" levels? 3) I can't help thinking that I may have butchered something while trying to get the UPS program installed - I had a shocker with unmenu for some reason. Have attached my syslog & my go file if someone could shed some light it would be appreciated: #!/bin/bash # Start the Management Utility /usr/local/sbin/emhttp & /boot/unmenu/uu CTRLALTDEL=YES LOGSAVE=30 sysctl -w kernel.poweroff_cmd="/sbin/powerdown" cd /boot/packages && find . -name '*.auto_install' -type f -print | sort | xargs -n1 sh -c thx Paul
  7. I'll second that Seagate has serious quality issues - at least with the 1.5TB and to a lesser extent the 1.0TB. I am running 6/6 at the moment, with all variations of firmware (so not just SD15 but also CC1H). Of the 6 that have died 2 of them have been replacements through RMA so I don't think their quality has got any better I'm sorry to say. Haven't had the clicking sound, but they would progressively rack up errors in the thousands very quickly. As soon as I see serious errors, I RMA them. Not a pleasant experience. I currently have a WD 2TB as my cache drive and its performed flawlessly to date. I'll never buy seagate again as the constant rebuilding is somethign that should NOT be a regular occurence! PK
  8. I have 3 x 1.5TB in a UNRAID pro array, all were recognised with ACHI turned on so this is unusual. I haven't had good experiences with the 1.5TB seagates with both the supposed "new good" firmware (CC1H) nor with the old firmware models after upgrade. Watch the error rates closely as they rack up quickly with little warning. Off the 3 i purchased in December 2008, 2 have been RMA'd and replaced under warranty, the 3rd is now dead, and one of the replacements (delivered in April 08) is showing 5,000 errors already. I only use the array for movies, music and photo backup, so not exactly a hard core environment. Needless to say not impressed with seagate, am now trialling the 1 & 2TB's from WD and so far so good. I would get it RMA's if you can. PK
  9. Hi, I have a Seagate 1.5TB which is showing ever increasing sector errors (increased from 1,000 to 5,000 in past few days) and based on my experience with the seaget 1.5TB its a matter of if not when it will die. This is my 3rd 1.5TB seagate which has gone belly up this year (2 of them came with the new CC1H firmware - and one was upgraded from the SD15 firmware). I am one very unhappy seagate customer, am now back to using WD as the 1.5TB seagates are absolute junk in my experience. One of the drives completely died without warning and stupid me restored the array after it died so I lost 1.5TB of data (lucky it was DVD rips that I own so just waste of my time). anyone had bad experiences with the WD 2TB jobbies? Enough of the rant I guess i have two options: 1) Replace the drive and let the parity rebuild the information 2) Move the data from the dodgy drive across to a spare (i have a 2TB spare at moment) - but will this affect the shares? I think option 2 would be faster but don't know the effect it has on the array. Advice appreciated.
  10. Thx Joe - much appreciated. I screwed up the last time I had a drive die by hitting restore (I know should have read the forums first!) so was a little nervous about loosing more data. thx for the quick response.
  11. Hi guys, I want to move an existing UNRAID server across to a new flash GUID. Unfortunately for reasons I wont go into I dont have the config file for the current array and as such I want to know how I can "build" the new array and maintain the data that is on the current drives. Advice appreciated.
  12. Joe, Seems like i cried wolf a bit prematurely. The HP flash formater seems to have fixed the problem. i swore i tried it before but whatever i did seems to have worked. Array is initialising as we speak, so I'll make sure I triple check everythign before wasting people's time. BTW by the looks of it the board looks to be compatible at this early stage. PK
  13. hi guys, Have a Gigabyte EG45M-DS2H that I have lying around that i wanted to test unraid with just to see what the fuss was about. Have tried just about all the different bios settings to get this thing to boot unraid but without success. The bios shows the USB drive (sandisk cruzer micro 2GB) and it shows during post but the MB hangs just following DMI updation (shows its successful). i have tried it with only one stick of ram (2Gb stick) and with out anything else connected - now i've run out of ideas. Am starting to think i screwed up the "preparation of the flash drive but I've tried it now twice and I don't think I've made a mistake but then again maybe i have. I know the MB isn't on the compatibility list but I had it lying around so thought I'd give it a go to see if I could use it successfully in a server environment. any help appreciated, PK
