  1. Oops! yes, you are right. I didn't see an increase in share size when the disks were added, but after I shut down and restarted the the array the "Free" space now included the new disks.
  2. Howdy, I have just added 2 disks to my array and am wondering how to use those disks to expand an existing share. The share I want to expand (my only share on the system) was created with 4 disks and was done by leaving the "Include Disk(s):" parameter empty. Do I just need to enter "disk5, disk6" or do I now need to list all 6 disks? Just afraid of mucking the share up. Thanks, Peter
  3. Received my 4224 directly from Norco in California. I've done a build using the parts list from Greenleaf Prototype Build 24 Drive Beast. Easy to assemble - boy there is lot of room in that case! Nice. Booted right up first time. Tested the drive bays 4 at a time and I guess I'm lucky because all backplanes work fine. Replaced all the fans with Noctua fans (used headers on motherboard) and the case is now very, very quiet. The screaming delta fans that come with the case are too funny. Swapping fans took 15 minutes. First attempts at preclear rebooted system after 30 seconds. Ran memtest and sure enough ram crapped out. Hmmm. Moved my two sticks from the black slots to the blue slots and memtest ran for 14 hours perfectly. I guess there is a difference between the slots. Whatever, seems to work. Am currently preclearing WD 1-3T (for parity), WD 3-2TB and a couple beater 80GB drives (just to stress the backplanes a little more). So all WD Green drives are running at or below 40C. The two beaters precleared fast but ran super hot for the first step (50-60C). For the next round I'm going to pull the beater drives as I don't want to cook the backplanes. Thus far I am very impressed: hardware and software installation was a snap! Glad I didn't go the tower route. Cheers, EarthImage
  4. "Look at the shares section in the unofficial manual in the unRAID Wiki." I have read the Wiki (official and un-offical UnRaid Manuals and many, many posts on this subject), but the subject, to me a least, is a little confusing. From what I have read, it seems that for general backup that setting "Split Level = 100" and an "Allocation Method = Fill-Up" might be good? But I am just guessing. Is "Allocation Method = High Water" better?? Is my Split Level set at 100 wrong? Being absolutely new to UnRaid and these concepts I have to say the answer is not clear to me. Most examples and discussions are around Media and streaming movies (sigh... ). Maybe a section in the Wiki for general backups would be good? An example of how digital photographers might want to setup there shares would be great. There are always going to be people like me that just don't get it!
  5. Hello, Just built my first unraid server with parts laying around the office. The purpose of the server is for general backups of digital art (files up to a couple gig). The server will be used for backing up data. We will not be watching movies from it! Have to admit I'm a bit confused with shares and split levels. Currently I have 3 2TB green drives installed, one as parity. So if I want to create a simple share called "Art", then I assume using "Allocation Method = Fill up" is best (??), but then what should I set the "split level" to? Eventually I can see having 6 2TB drives. On my desk at work the parts are piling up for a 24 drive beast that will be used for storing satellite imagery (HUGE datasets up to 100GB+). So I'm hoping that by fiddling with my little home server I can get my head around the share settings and basic unraid concepts. Any general guides out there for us non-streaming media folk? Absolutely thrilled by what I have seen of this unraid technology!! Thanks, Peter
  6. Well, after reading the above comments I decided to go with the Norco 4224, especially since the cost of getting 4 drive cages for a tower setup is outrageous (I'm in northern Canada). I ended up ordering directly from Norcotek in California. I was very impressed by their email response and how quickly they got the case in the mail. I will hope for the best in regards to the backplanes. I also ordered the 120mm fan wall replacement.
  7. Yikes! Researching on building a large unraid box (20 drives) for storing satellite imagery and was just about to order a Norco 4224. But after reading this long thread it seems obvious that Norco quality control is non-existent. I can't afford to order this case and pray that the back planes are going to function. I don't have the time to do an email campaign with Norco if pieces are bad (March year-end deadline). Can anyone suggest a similar product that is reasonably priced? Or do I just go tower with something like the Antec 1200? The 4224 is $400 in Canada and a tower with 4 drive cages will approach $600. So the question becomes is there something in the $600-ish ($800?) range that would be similar to the 4224 but coming working!? Thanks, EarthImage
