  1. I am currently looking at purchasing two licenses to UNRAID: one for a Dell R710 Server with Netapp Disk Shelfs (currently trialing UNRAID on this server) and one for my primary PC. I am trying to better understand UNRAID in comparison to ESXi, Hyper-V, and VMWare Workstation to better grasp an understanding on how exactly I want to plan my move. The R710: that's a done deal - it works; works well, and does what I need it to do: be a storage vault. The PC on the other hand is a little bit more tricky. It's nicknamed the 'Nexus' as it is the most centralized component of my computing architecture. Anything and everything related to a computer whether that be something for work or for pleasure will at some point touch it or pass through it which is how it's earned its nickname. So I will refer to it as that after this as it's what everyone already does. The Nexus is pretty much a $16,000+ server wrapped in an EATX sized enthusiast PC. Equipped with an Intel Optane 905P PCI-E, Samsung 970 Evo, WD Blue SSD, and 4 Western Digital Gold Enterprise HDDs a long with a GeForce Titan Xp (soon to be changed to another Titan), four NICs of which two are 10Gbps, eight PCI-E slots that are in use delivering PCI-E Gen 3 x16 performance across a multiplexer for the Intel CPU, topped off with handcrafted liquid cooling it pretty much has everything and the kitchen sink built into it. With 96GB of RAM to work with (soon to be 128GB). My Goal: Transition certain 'server' functions away from Windows while also maintaining the ability to use the system as if it was a Windows or Linux machine. What I Know: From watching many videos on UNRAID, I know this can be done. I know it can actually be taken one step further and you can throw up Windows and Linux seamlessly across screens at the same time. I know that the GPU can be passed through to prevent performance loss. I also know that the CPU and RAM will take a minor hit from the hypervisor but I don't anticipate it to be any more than what it already takes. What I Would Like to Know: I am one of those people that 'jumps in' but in this case I do realize I need to know a few things ahead of time. Such things include how does performance compare to Windows with Hyper-V or VMWare Workstation running underneath. While I've seen it: I have no idea how to pass the GPU on and use the PC in a way that pretty much means I don't need to buy another system to use the system. I want UNRAID running but I also want to be able to use Windows accessibly. How does UNRAID play with a FIPS compliant Trusted Platform Module? I get that it's called "UNRAID" for a reason, but the system's drives (minus the Optane and Samsung) run off the SAS of an LSI MegaRaid 9xxx - and yes, it's in IT Mode; it actually came out of the box that way when ordering direct. Does the RAID present have to be sacrificed for the 4 WD Golds that are in RAID mode? I ran into this problem with the Dell R710 but won't know for the Nexus until I get the system back: is UNRAID actually able to boot UEFI with UEFI Drivers? On the R710 I had to use BIOS but the R710 is, naturally, far older and from the YouTube videos I watched, supposedly not a system that can work with UNRAID with the PERC 6/i even though it works perfectly fine with the latest release.
