  1. Same exact thing with one of mine - I ordered two. On one, the 4th bay activity light is wacky and doesn't operate like the rest. I requested an RMA, but not sure if it's worth it now as it says I have to pay $11 to ship it back. Curious to see how it works out with you. Did you have to pay shipping back or is that something the manager at Newegg is looking into as well?
  2. When I replaced my fans there were 5 jumpers if I remember correctly. Anyone know what the other 3 do (not J1 and J2)? I don't see the manual listed for download on Norco's site.
  3. I went ahead and removed the 75gb drive and put in another 3tb in the same tray to make sure it wasn't a faulty light or something. Both lights are constantly on now with the 3tb. ____ Also wanted to clarify since I had some PM's ask me: I am using the AOC-SASLP-MV8 with firmware 3.1.0.21 (which is for the SASLP and can be found on the Supermicro ftp driver website). The driver is 4.0.0.1200 which is also for the SASLP, but it is not on the Supermicro driver site. You can get it from emailing support, or through the AVS forum thread posted earlier. Currently, I am using the cards in WHS 2011 and it is my understanding from going through this debacle is that the 4.0.0.1200 driver is needed only for use in Windows so that 3tb or higher drives can be used. For Unraid, you will most likely not have to concern yourself with this. Hope that helps!
  4. Thank you everyone for your comments here that have allowed me to figure out all the misconceptions about the SASLP and 3tb drives! Here is what I was able to determine: Previously, I thought the 4.0.0.1200 driver was for the SAS2LP as it is not offered in the SuperMicro ftp download site for the SASLP. This was reinforced by random threads in forums commenting that the "4.0.x" drivers were only for the SAS2LP (and the fact that Supermicro has 4.0.x drivers and firmware on their ftp site only for the SAS2). After Johnm's last comment I went ahead and downloaded the 4.0.0.1200 driver linked in the AVS forums thread and used notepad to look at some of the files and saw that it is in fact for Marvell 64xx/63xx cards (the 4.0 drivers on the SuperMicro site show 94xx as it should be for the SAS2). I went ahead and installed the 4.0.0.1200 driver and I can now boot up and see 3tb drives using the SASLP. Why this driver is not on the Supermicro ftp site is beyond me so I emailed their support again and only got a response with the 4.0.0.1200 as an attachment with a note saying something to the effect of "here is the newest driver for SASLP." As of right now, I have installed 3 x 3tb drives, and I also kept the Raptor 75gb in to make sure they all worked together- and so far they do. I have not transferred any data as of yet, but I can see, access, and format the drives. The drives are all in a Norco SS-500 and the only strange thing is the green activity LED lights stay constantly lit for the 3tb drives, whereas the 75gb does not. All have the blue LED on. Is this normal in your experience or should I be concerned that this is an indicator of potential stability problems?
  5. Just tried it with an older 75gb Raptor drive and it booted right up and recognized the drive in WHS. I then tried it with both the Raptor and the Seagate 3tb I was trying earlier by itself. Booted up, but only the Raptor showed up as an available drive. So, I have confirmed that the card works within my system, but it sure doesn't seem to work with 3tb drives- at least in WHS. I have been placing the drives in a Norco SS-500 and I did notice the green drive light stayed on constantly with the 3tb drive, but only lit occasionally with the Raptor if that offers any insight as to why the 3tb doesn't work.
  6. Only place I saw PEG was under "Primary Display" where I could select iGFX, PEG, or PCI. It was on "Auto," and I switched it to iGFX since I am using a i3-2100 (although I would have thought it would offer "iGPU" instead). Problem still exists.
  7. Thank you for that confirmation. Do you have any suggestions as to why I am not able to get them to work? I am currently testing them with an Asus P8Z68-M Pro motherboard and have them in the PCIe 2.0 x16 and x4 slot. This is also currently under WHS 2011. At boot up, the screen shows the two Marvell cards and how they are reset, etc. Then it goes through the rest of the bios startup, but when WHS trys to launch, it loops back to the bios start up cycle and then ends in having me select to start in recovery mode. After I posted, I read in the SATA controller card forum that "UncleDirtNap" was trying to get an IBM ServeRAID M1015 card to work on his Biostar TP45 HP motherboard, but he found out that the motherboard PCIe slots were reserved only for graphics cards. I have never heard of PCIe slots being only for graphics cards, but could this be the problem I am having as well? The instruction manual for my Asus board indicates: "This motherboard has two PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots that support PCI Express 2.0 x 16 graphic cards complying with the PCI Express specifications." While not specifically stating it is only for graphics cards, it sure seems like that is the case. I called Asus technical support, but they had no idea.
  8. There is a lot of misinformation about weather or not the Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards will work with 3tb drives. I even see that prostuff1 with greenleaf has been able to get them to work with Hitachi 4tb drives in this post. However, I have a AOC-SASLP-MV8 with .21 firmware (.22 driver) and it does not work. I have been reading conflicting reports that the 4.0.0.XXXX driver and/or firmware is needed, but those are for the SAS2LP, not the SASLP. Can someone please clarify: 1) Does the SASLP (not SAS2LP) work with 3tb drives? 2) If so, what specific firmware and driver is needed?
  9. Nice, this is encouraging. The external model I am looking at is STAC3000102 which is availalble at Costco for only $139. I have read that this model has the 3TB ST3000DM001 in it. This is a fantastic price considering the fact that the next best deal I've seen lately are the Samsung 2TB F4's at Newegg for $99. Was this recent that you did opened yours and do you recall if the external housing was square or had rounded edges? I believe the square edged model is the newer version with the ST3000DM001, whereas the rounded edge is older and had the XT's in it like you have.
  10. I've read conflicting reports and would like to know if anyone can confirm or deny that when you open a Seagate Goflex external drive you can then use it as an internal drive by simply switching to GPT and formatting it. If this is possible, will it be exactly as if you purchased a "regular" internal drive. Specifically, I am referring to the 3TB version if that matters. Most searches pull up that this is possible, but I have also read that it can be a crap shoot as to what drive is in it (hopefully the ST3000DM001), or that it may not have a sata interface, and also I have seen something referring to it not having the correct firmware.
  11. I have started to compile the parts for my build along with an HTPC build at the same time and now have this potential mix up to my setup: Last week I purchased an ASUS P8Z68-M Pro motherboard on a Newegg deal intended for my HTPC motherboard (to be used with an i3-2125). This week, I found out that I can get a Ivy i5-3570K w/Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H motherboard for only $50 more than the Asus/i3 combo. So, my thinking is to use the Asus as my server board along with an i3-2100 (instead of the E3-1230) and the i5/Gigabyte for my HTPC as after doing some more research, I don't think I would really use IPMI on the Supermicro. Is this a good idea? Does the Asus provide a solid choice considering the rest of my parts/intended use?
  12. In the Antec 1200 V3 manual it shows you can mount an SSD on the bottom of the case, but does anyone know if there is still room to do this if you have four Norco SS 500 Bays installed?
  13. Cool deal, thanks for the input! I think I will stick with what I have then. Last question I can think of right now is since I will be using 3TB drives, I know I need to go with version 5. Just want to make sure the latest Beta 14 is what I should install?
  14. I was not going for a virtualized unRaid, just "regular" v5. The parts I selected were from a list not specifically targeted for unRaid so that's why I'm not sure if it's over or under kill for my needs. So it looks like I need to reexamine the parts (CPU, motherboard, ram). Suggestions?
  15. Copy that, will update my specs to the 1230. For the HBA, it looks like I should probably go with the SASLP (not the "2") version as I searched around after reading your responses and saw the "2" does have compatibility issues and is somewhat harder to find available. Seeing as four of the six SATA ports on the motherboard are 3Gb/s anyway, does it really matter not having 6GB/s on the controller cards- especially for what I'm using it for? BetaQuasi- thanks for the info on Plex, looks like it's covered for me. I see your rig is similar to mine. I noticed you have 16GB of memory as opposed to my 8- do you think it will be a big benefit to me going to 16? Want to make sure I'm not over looking anything.
  16. Correct, the card Frank1940 and I linked to at New Egg is the SASLP-MV8. The card that was originally suggested to me is the SAS2LP-MV8. So I still need to confirm which one I should get. Also still looking for the Plex advice.
  17. About ready to take the plunge and build my first unRaid! I currently have a Synology 4 drive NAS and filled it up way faster than I thought, so I am going big now and plan to build the following 20 drive server: Case: Antec Twelve Hundred V3 HDD Cages x4: NORCO SS-500 5 Bay PSU: PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W CPU: Xeon E3-1225 3.1GHz 4C/4T 95W LGA 1155 / Intel HD Graphics P3000 CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230 Sandy Bridge 3.2GHz Motherboard: Supermicro X9SCM-F MBD-X9SCM-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C204 chipset microATX with IPMI Memory: Kingston ValueRAM KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G DDR3-1333 ECC CL9 2 x 4GB Kit HBA x2: Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 8-port SAS/SATA 6.0Gb/s Controller (link was to SASLP, not SAS2LP) HBA x2: SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 Cable x4: 0.5m SFF-8087 to Four SATA Forward Breakout Cable (3ware CBL-SFF8087OCF-05M) Flash Drive: SanDisk Cruzer Fit 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Most of these parts were taken from a suggested list for a 20 drive hot swap box on AVSForum so I would like to know if this is a good set up for unRaid and how I plan to use it. It's use is for streaming movies (full Bluray rips from original discs), music, and photos. I would also like some type of remote access which I believe Remote Potato or Plex offers. From what I have read, it seems Plex is the best option as I would most likely want to transcode to an Android phone or similar. In home, everything will be streamed wired to an HTPC (i3 2125) and other computers using XBMC. Please give me your input on my proposed set up- does it all work together, overkill, underkill, etc. I also have some specific questions: 1) I am still reading up on the Plex add-on, but am I right in that if I use it, I will be able to access and stream (via transcode) to remote computers when traveling. Has anyone done this and is it effective (ie, no stuttering, long buffering, etc.)? Is it better to use Plex as the add-on to the unRaid server, or would it be better to set it up on the HTPC? 2) The SATA controller is listed as part SAS"2"LP, but on New Egg, the "2" isn't there. And from the original post I got it from on AVS it says the card has 6GB/s transfer rate, but on New Egg it says 3GB/s. Is the linked card the correct on I need? Thank you and I am looking forward to entering the world of unRaid!
  18. I am in the early stages of planing out my unRaid build and I am trying to figure out if it can have some similar functionality as the Synology NAS I currently have. I have been reading a ton of posts and apologize if I happened to miss the answers right in front of my face, but I am still not sure on how you can access your music, photos, and files securely from a remote computer/location and via an Android phone? Synology comes with a bunch of aps for this via http, but I really only need to view photos and stream music to my phone, but I would also like to be able to download them (as well as files/movies) from a remote computer. I do not need to stream video remotely, I would rather download it if needed. I have seen things mentioned like Remote Potato and Orb which, to my understanding, access your home PC that is connected to your server, but I thought I read there is a way to install something like this on your cache disc - Subsonic? I also saw a post that recommended to never access your server remotely. Basically, is there a way to do what I need securely, and if so what is the best method?
