binhex-rtorrentvpn port forwarding for external webui access

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have the binhex-rtorrentvpn docker running on my unraid server and everything appears to be working locally. I can access 192.168.x.x:PORT to access the webui on the local network no problem. However once I to port forward 192.168.x.x:PORT in my router and attempt to reach the webui from outside my network I hit an "ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT" error.

How come this is happening? What would be the best way to make this work? Some people are probably going to suggest it but I'd rather not be required to connect to VPN (if I can prevent it) to access my webui.

If more information is required please let me know.

Ended up running a VM with caddy reverse proxy to run as intermediary. Still looking for a solution that does not require a me to run a VM all the time though, any help would be appreciated.

You need to use the SWAG or Nginx Proxy Manager docker to create a reverse proxy to allow access.

Thanks, I'll be looking into those options. Do you know why the ruTorrent requires a reverse proxy while other containers do not?

Any container that you would want to access to from the outside world would require a reverse proxy.

For most containers (e.g. Emby, Sonarr, Radarr) I'm able to just port forward the ports they're on and they work just fine. So far it's just the rtorrent or deluge dockers for which this doesn't work. I'm running a remote reverse proxy on a VPS is why I initially didn't bother with the local one.

That's why I was wondering what was the difference between these dockers.

The Nginx Proxy Manager had me up and running in <10 minutes, great tip.
