October 9, 200718 yr I updated yesterday to 4.2.1 from 4.1. Everything seemed to work fine except a minor glitch that would crash Safari whenever the root password would be set. Today however, everything is not that fine? I started the machine and wanted to activate user share, I created a new user, which seem to work fine (or Did it?) and then stop the array to activate the user share, this resulted in an unresponsive system from the web interface, still I managed to reboot from telnet, and went back to see what happenned. The array took some time to start after the web became accessible (was it scanning for user share folder ?), when i finally came up, I went to share where I could list user share, I decided to stop the array again to disable the user share, and since then? my system totally crashed, no possibility to do anything neither by telnet or by the web, I had to do a hard reset after i waited some long minute. The result: I cannot boot anymore! something about dmi update and boot error. (real time edit)And just at that moment, when I was writing those line I started the system to check the error message (dmi blabla) it booted. What is going on ? actually it booted…to a kernel panic a problem with unpacking initramfs, junk in the compress archive??
October 9, 200718 yr Sounds to me like memory corruption. Maybe one of you memory sticks just broke. You should try booting memtest 86+ and see if you memory is ok. If you can't do that and you have atleast two sticks in your computer try booting your computer with just one. If that doesn't help try the other stick.
October 9, 200718 yr Author What I did : redownload 4.2.1, retransfer the necessary bits, and it did boot, seems ok. Unfortunatly I don't have a keyboard, apparently my mac keyboard doesn't cut it and since I moved recently I left the other away. So i have no way to boot the memtest. I'll bring one from work tomorrow to try this out, but I tested my memory recently and it was ok, it's a bit weird it would suddenly start to corrupt itself just when I upgrade.
