A little networking help please.

So I built, and set up, my server yesterday. It's my first foray into the Linux world and I think it went smoothly. The problem lies in the fact that my network is all Mac, except the server. From within my local network I can telnet into the server without any problems. However, the IP address that my router (Airport Extreme) assigns the router is of the form 10.0.1.xx, like all airport addresses, and that is what's reported by ifconfig on the server. My question is how do you find out the "external" address so that I can log into the server from work, for instance. As you can tell I'm really new at networking etc...For my Macs I can surf to a site like "what's my IP" to see the "real" IP, not sure how to get that info for the server.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I need a little push in the right direction.

Short answer, you cannot/should not do what you wish to do.  There is no "safe" external IP address.

Longer answer, you need to set up a virtual private network over a secure link to do what you want.  It is the only way you can do what you desire safely.

As soon as you open up your server to the outside world you'll have every script kiddie pounding at your door.  They will get in.  (There is only 1 way to keep them out, and that is to not let them in at all.)

The fact that you are asking the question indicates you do not have the background and skills on how to secure your entire LAN.  Even an expert will not do as you are requesting without a LOT of thought.

This question has nothing to do with unRAID, it is ALL about your router and network security.  Your entire LAN is at risk as soon as you open it up to the outside world.

Thanks. You're right about the skills, just don't have 'em. Eventually, maybe I can figure out a VPN solution, but for now, as Emily Litella would say, nevermind.
