I saw several articles where people had that ASPM problem. it was never enabled on my board, but I make sure every time!  So I disabled LAN1 and enabled LAN2, then booted with a static IP connected to the gigabit switch (trendnet 8 port).  It worked as it has before, as eth0, on the LAN, no WAN.  So I rebooted and assigned a fixed DHCP address.  It's back on the net.  For how long is anybody's guess.  It drops as a DHCP fixed, static, anything.  At least I have downloading back and a way to fix the no IP address thing as a stopgap (unplugging), but I don't even know what part of this little plan to blame so I can fix it.

If it happens again I'll install the NIC.  If that works, I think I can safely call the integrated NICs the problem.
