March 29, 201115 yr Hello, I am newbie and planning to start building my first unRaid server. I am looking at the following components: 1. Motherboard: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/880G-E45.html What do you all think? 2. CPU: Phenom II X2 560 or Phenom II X4 840 Does having 4 cores help unRaid? Does AMD's cool n quite technology consume low power when the CPU is not being used much? 3. Does not having SATA III ports cause any disadvantage (assuming I can afford 2TB SATA III HDDs). Please suggest. Thanks in advance. -Raj

Does AMD's cool n quite technology consume low power when the CPU is not being used much? 2 cores is more than enough unless you plan on doing some heavy transcoding. 3. Does not having SATA III ports cause any disadvantage (assuming I can afford 2TB SATA III HDDs). Will not make any difference. Frankly SATAI speeds would be enough for nearly all drives.
March 29, 201115 yr Author Thanks prostuff1. Another quick question, can I use this machine to run windows and then use VMware to run unRaid? Thanks.
March 29, 201115 yr Thanks prostuff1. Another quick question, can I use this machine to run windows and then use VMware to run unRaid? Thanks. It can be done... kind of but is not an easy thing to do and it does limit you to the free version of unRAID (1 parity drive and 2 data drives) Plus, I would not want to trust Windows to stay online for any extended period of time. The first mandatory update that comes through that requires the computer to be reboot is going to more than likely not play nicely with the VM you have running.

Thanks for the quick reply.
