Running Windows VM from monitor connected to the GPU

Featured Replies

Hi everyone! I am quite new to unRaid so I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge.

Basically, I have unRaid set up on my machine which has a dedicated GPU (but no iGPU). This machine is connected to my TV and I would like to create a Windows VM so I could play games on my TV.

My understanding is that I need an additional GPU that unRaid can use for the GUI. The main GPU would then be put as passthrough for the Windows VM which I could launch from the unRaid GUI from the TV. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Quite correct, but the main gpu is not that dedicated to the vm but that used by unraid: when the os (unraid) boots it needs a gpu, that is the primary gpu.

The additional gpu (the secondary one) will be (better) configured to be attached to vfio driver (so that unraid cannot use it) and it will be passed through to the vm.

So, for a setup with 2 gpus:

1. primary gpu in slot 0 (top one): in use by unraid

2. secondary gpu in any other slot other than the primary one, better attached to vfio (isolated at boot and not attached to vfio "on the fly"), in use by the vm

Depending on the gpu in use, one could be able to use the same gpu both for unraid and for the vm (NOTE: NOT AT THE SAME TIME), this is a setup with a single gpu, but a 2 gpu setup is the best you can have.
