What's a reasonable upload speed for large files

Featured Replies

I've finally got around to buying some Intel Nic cards and updated to 4.2.1 and have been uploading a backup of another PC which is a 15gb file.

The upload is erratic to say the least with the new Nics under 4.0, from 23% to 10% to 0% for about 10 secs then repeat.  I reckon I'm running at about 8% to 10% network utilization on average.  Now under 4.2.1 I'm getting a steady 2.0% Network utilization.

What is a reasonable speed for uploading?  I'm running a E4500 2.2ghz Core2Duo CPU with 2gb Ram in the Unraid.

Also, are there any lan/nic settings I can tweak on the UnRaid (or my regular PC) that would enable the uploading of files to run less sporadically?

Some machines on my network are 10/100 still so Jumbo frames are out I guess, is the Unraid set for Jumbo frames?

[EDIT] I thought I'd add that I have 2 Gigabit switches between the Unraid and the main PC

Thanks,

Mark.

Your basic observation is consistent with what myself and others experience, though we are striving to make improvements.

A ~5GB read from Unraid takes me about four minutes, double that for a write - both done via GigE.  That calcs to a bit better than 20MB/sec for reads, 10MB/sec for writes, making my utilization 16% for reads, 8% for writes.
