Not sure thisis right after a drive swap...

Featured Replies

Okay, I've swapped drives a few times in the past with no issues but this doesn't look right to me.

Swapped an IDE 400 in place of a 300. Fired system up and heard an odd clunk. Uh Oh! Drive was building at this point and all seemed well. Tailed the log and sure enough saw errors after about a 10% build. Then saw errors on web page. Powered down as I began to hear what sounded like a drive banging it's heads against the parking stop. :o

Reseated cables etc. - all looked pretty good but these IDE can be weird. Fired it up and about 5 drives came upas "not found". Been there, done that, on a regular basis with this machine. Pulled out cheat sheet and set them all correctly. Machine still had red balls on multiple drives. Rebooted, set the devices again (this seems normal actually for this machine). then everything looked okay except what looked likeorange on drive 4 - the one I swapped. System says "Started" with the same red or orange ball nest to the word started. Disk 4's content is available, I have no optionto generate parity. It doesn't appear to be building drive 4 but drive 4 shows temp, the correct size, etc. - zero reads or writes.

Log shows nothing odd. It looks like drive 4 is out tolunch and I'm running degraded with a drive down - yes? No more bad sounds at least (lol). I can put the old drive back in and am actually inclined to but am not sure what's up with #4. Thoughts and suggestions?

TIA!

Put the old drive back in, the IDE 400 is a 'clunker' !  You will probably have to rebuild parity, you may also have the choice to rebuild the 300, over itself.
