The Self-Encrypting Drive models, or SEDs, provide targeted encryption and data invalidation. In other words, you can pick what sectors of the drive to erase on command or on a power cycle. The third option is the most interesting, though--if your HDD criminals plug their stolen goods into an unknown computer, they might just find the drive completely erased when they boot it up.
