December 6, 200718 yr Hi, I've just setup my first unraid using version 4.2 Basic. I am able to connect to it just fine via XP Pro and Vista, however I have a laptop with XP Home installed and when I try to connect it pops up a dialog asking for a login name and password. My searching on the internet as found that indeed xp home is crippled, but that you can work around this when using shared networking by making sure that both windows machines have an identical login and password. Since I am running Basic I can't create additional users to match my laptop, but I did try creating a "root" user on my laptop and setting a password to match with unraid. It didnt' work. I set the password through the web interface, which I'm not sure if that set the "right" user password. I somehow think not. Would this problem go away if I had a pro account and could create users? Is there a way to make this work with Basic? Anybody else heard of xp home having this problem? Thanks for any advice. J
December 6, 200718 yr Hi xbit The differencens between basic, plus, and pro is only related to the number of disks it can handle. My kids have XP home on their laptops, and we have no problems with the unraid server. We have two prokeys thoug, but it worked as well when I tried out the concept last year... and found it worth buying :-) Happy troubleshooting /Rene
December 6, 200718 yr Author Thanks for the reply, good to know that it is possible to get XP Home working with unRaid. I'm pretty sure that starting with 4.2 all the user/security stuff was disabled in Basic (as another upgrade incentive). I blew my budget this time around on the hardware to set this thing up, but I do plan on purchasing the pro when it comes time to expand beyond my current capacity. Anyone have any suggestions of what to try next? I've spent several hours trying various suggestions I've found on the internet for xp home networking troubles, but none have worked and I'm coming here hoping that maybe it was an unRaid specific problem that I could get help with... or even if it wasn't a problem specifically with Home and unRaid that perhaps someone would still have some insight. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
December 6, 200718 yr I know it is frustrating, but "what to try" will cover several pages, and take quite some time. So list up what you have done and what were the result, be specific and through, then it will be easier to help you. /Rene
