Hello,

I am in proces of bringing my array online. I'm start out with a free 3 drive version first and will eventually up grade to the plus when economic and financially able to.

Currently my primary array is ready but not commission for service yet. it will be running 4.7

I'm playing with setting up the unraid with a small 3 drives 10G ea size array.

I seem to have difficult understanding user share setting.

Here is my setting (please see attached jpeg us1.jpg

Question 1 - is the setting of include disk correct ? ie  "disk1,disk2" is the correct entry in the include disk

Question 2 - if disk1 and disk2 is included, then should media folder be created in both disk1 and disk2 ?  current after I click on apply button , only disk 1 have media folder. disk2 is empty. is it correct? and what is it mean ? why ?

Qeustion3 - how to creat user share for dvd and bluray and any other folder after media folder. and it split level.

I'm still confuse about split level setting.  I've read the un-Offcial unRaid manual at the example of serve have 4 disks with disk1 hold dvd, disk 2and 3 hold bluray e.t.c.

I understand the disk share view but not the user share view.

i.e. how to set the user share view in unraid that will implement the disk share view.

if you could  post a jpg of how it should be, that would help a lot as I'm a reading  challenging person.

Thanks

Ok.

I just read a few more post down and I see that this concept of user share is kind of hard to wrap the head around, even though the words are there to read and re-read and re-read..re r.e.ad...zzzzz.....

I like to thanks for answering my question and apology if I've asked the same question that been repeatedly answer over and over and over...over ov..er..zzz.zzzzzzz....

I did read the official, the unOfficial over and over and over... yes I did....z.zz..z.z.z.zzzzzzz

still it a little foggy.

I have no problem of install 4.7 preclear, setting up mail, assign drive, install unmenu...etc... except I still have a little foggy about this split level and user share.... it just almost with in reach of my hand so I can wrap it a round my head. and get the array on line and commision it to service..but this darn foggy thing......z..z.z.z...z..z.z........

1. Yes but you can leave blank and all disks are used. You could just use exclude disk11 if that's the only one you do not want to use.

2. Perfectly normal. The share only gets created on disk2 when it's needed.

3. You want those folders go inside/under the Media share? You go to Windows Explorer, open the network, open Tower, open Media and then create the folders. These aren't shares, only Media is a share.

When you turn-on user shares they just appear on the network and they show the contents. There is nothing else you have to setup.

Your included disk settings (disk1,disk2) are correct.  A folder won't be created on disk2 until it is needed.  Since you are using the High Water disk allocation method, disk2 won't be used at all until disk1 is more than 50% full.  This is normal.  If you want disk2 to be used immediately, then use the 'Most Free' disk allocation method.

Split level depends on how you organize your files.  I'm not very good at explaining it, the manuals probably do a better job than I would.

To create a new user share just enter a name in the next empty box (under your 'media' share) and click 'apply'.  You can call a user share DVD, BluRay, or whatever you want.  You can leave the split level blank for now and figure it out later.

Ok thanks for answering.

I finally understand the user share and split level now. feel so split level challenge person... ;D What help new unRaid member is to set up a small array say 10G and 20G and just play with it. plus the help from the forum community.

Next step is for me to understand the user permission.

I like to have a user share that would be like:

DATA

------TAX

----------Year

So this user share would be DATA with split level 2.

Next I like to set access permision to this with a log in and password

Question 1 can I do this with basic version.

Question 2  how to accomplish it.

Thanks for the tip

Yes, you can do this with User Level security. Makes some users and assign them via the "Exceptions", "Valid Users" and "Invalid Users" on the share itself. Check here though, User Security is not an option on the basic/free version. You need to upgrade to Plus.
