Long smart test shows no errors but...

Featured Replies

I'm seeing 288 errors for one disk in the error column on the unRaid Main page.  I've run a short and long smart test and see no errors or issues at all.  I've verified parity twice and there are no sync errors.  I'm not sure when the errors appeared but the count hasn't changed since I noticed them.  I'm assuming the disk is fine but am wondering what could cause the error count.  If there isn't an issue could the count be reset to 0 and would it be a bad idea to do so?  I'm on version 4.7.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Sorry.  Syslog attached.  Running unRaid version 4.7.  Using WD EARS 2TB as parity.  4 EARS 1.5TB data disks.  Let me know what additional info I can provide.

Errors affilated with a single drive are usually "read" errors.  (Write errors would take the drive immediately out of service)

Read errors are usually caused by un-readable sectors on the disk.  They would show in the SMART report as re-allocated sectors, or sectors pending re-allocation.

Since you have a parity drive, unRAID has a great feature of being able to re-construct the un-readable sector to supply it to the program playing the file.  It also re-writes the re-constructed sector back to the disk.  This would allow the disk to write it elsewhere (re-allocate the sector)  Usually though, the disk first attempts to write it back to its original location just in case it was not written correctly.    If it can be written (and read back correctly) is is not re-allocated.

post the full smart report for the drive.

Thanks for the help Joe.  I've attached the smart report for this drive.  I don't see any indication of re-allocated sectors or errors of any kind.  This is why I'm a little puzzled.  This server is a backup server and has a parity drive.  This may be overkill but I was thinking of running a preclear on this drive and letting it rebuild from parity to see if I get any errors.

Thanks again for the help Joe.
