Popcorn Hour can't see my PC anymore (or my Unraid Server)

Here goes:

I have a few PCHs connected to my Netgear 100Mbs switch. Also connected to that switch is my PC. Everything works fine at this point. I can see all my files in network browser and through YAMJ. I can even browse files on the PC through the PCH via Windows Media Connect.

Now here is the problem:

I just finished building an UnRaid server to house all of my files. The server is up and running and I am in the process of transferring all of my files to it. My Netgear switch that I mentioned above is on the other side of my living area and there is one Cat5e cable running under the floor to my computer area. In order to keep from having to run another length of cable under the floor, I put a small 100Mbs Dlink 5 port wired ethernet router on the PC end of my cable run. I plugged the cable coming from the Netgear switch (up through the floor) into the WAN port on the Dlink. I then plugged the PC into the #1 port on the Dlink and the UnRaid server in the #2 port on the Dlink.

The PC and the server see each other and I am moving files over to it. My PC can get through both the Dlink and the Netgear to the AT&T gateway and from there to the internet. My problem is now my PCHs can't see my PC.

When I go to Media Source in the PCH menu, select Network Browser, select WORKGROUP, select IANPC (my computer name) I get:

"No Content Found on Server"

When I go to Media Source in the PCH menu and select MOVIES (the name of my YAMJ share, I get:

"Unable to resolve the host name"

I haven't changed anything but putting the Dlink in the system so I know it has something to do with that. I can pull the cables out and put it back the way it originally was and everything is fine and back to normal. I just can't figure out what needs to be done to let the PCH see the PC and the sever.

Thanks

Here's your problem - you're creating a separate network by putting the router between the Netgear and the computers.  Simply plug all three devices into lan ports on the Dlink, then all should work.

That makes sense but that would require running another cable under the floor which is what I was trying to avoid.

I just ordered a Netgear GS105 gigabit switch to speed up transfers between my pc and server. If I replace the Dlink with this switch, will that solve my problem?

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were saying. I plugged all three into the LAN ports and now the PCH can see the PC. Yea! But now I've lost the Internet connection for my PC!?

ARRGH

I'm not 100% sure on how US setups go but I suspect if the netgear is a switch that isn't the issue.

With the AT&T gateway is that a modem/router? If so I suspect the Dlink may also be acting as a router also and both are trying to assign IP addresses. If the Dlink has a web admin page, log on and try to set it to DHCP disabled so it acts like a switch.

Yes the AT&T is a modem/router. I disabled the DHCP on the Dlink but so far no change.

As it stands, I can have access for my Popcorn Hours with all cables plugged into the LAN ports but no internet for my PC. or vice versa with the main cable plugged into the WAN port.

I guess I'll see what happens when the other switch gets here.

Have you tried restarting your network or rebooting on the PC after setting the dlink to DHCP disabled?

What OS are you running on your PC?

Try pinging the dlink, PCH, AT&T router, google to see what response you get. That should give you a better idea where it is getting stopped.

Man, I feel like such a noob.. Rebooting the pc & the PCH after disabling the DHCP  fixed everything.

Everything is plugged into the LAN ports on the Dlink router. Now to get the Gigabit switch installed so I can get more than 10MB/s transfers...

Thanks everyone. I owe you one...

Glad it all worked,

I suspect when you were running two DHCP routers that 2 things may have been allocated the same IP address so you would still have problems. Resetting/rebooting the PCs/PCHs would force them to get a new IP address clearing up the confusion.

.... assuming that both routers were configured for the same sub-net address!  Otherwise it may just have been that the addresses were in different ranges.
