3 GPU passthrough, only 2 passing through

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have 3 GPUs installed in my server and I'm attempting to passthrough 3 VMs, through 3 GPUs.

GPU 1 - GTX1660ti is set as initial display adapter in my bios and server boots up fine, but does not passthrough when I startup a Ubuntu vm

GPU 2 - GTX710 passed through Windows 10 PC fine.

GPU 3 - GT730 passes through MacOS Big Sur fine.

If I change initial display adapter to GPU2 it boots into Unraid OS and when I start VM it passes through fine.

No matter what I do, I cannot get my GTX1660ti to passthrough, even when it's not setup as initial display.

I have dumped vbios as per SpaceInvaderOne's instructions.

Has anybody had a similar issue and possibly resolved it?

Thanks in advance.

vfio: Cannot reset device 0000:0b:00.1, depends on group 31 which is not owned.

Even if in different iommu groups, maybe you need to attach to vfio also the usb controller at 0b:00.2 and the serial bus controller at 0b:00.3 of the gpu:

0b:00.2 USB controller [0c03]: NVIDIA Corporation TU116 USB 3.1 Host Controller [10de:1aec] (rev a1)
	Subsystem: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:2182]
	Kernel driver in use: xhci_hcd
0b:00.3 Serial bus controller [0c80]: NVIDIA Corporation TU116 USB Type-C UCSI Controller [10de:1aed] (rev a1)
	Subsystem: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:2182]

Attach them to vfio and change in your ubuntu vm from this:

    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x0b' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
      </source>
      <rom file='/mnt/user/isos/vbios/gtx1660ti.rom'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x03' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>

      </source>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x04' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
    </hostdev>

to this:

Reboot before running the ubuntu vm.

Edited by ghost82

As far as I can see there are no more info in the logs, and all should be setup correctly, so no more ideas..

Check if the vm hangs at boot or if the vm is booting but you have only no video output, maybe an issue inside the vm (drivers)?

  • Author

If I change any VMs to VNC they boot. It's only when I try and passthrough the GTX1660ti that I get 'No Signal Detected'

  • Author

To add to this. I've discovered that the Ubuntu VM boots fine when passing through the GTX1660ti but there is no signal. I can RDP to the VM from another, so the VM appears to be fine.

What's the output of lspci -vv for the gpu inside the vm (rdp server inside the vm + gpu passthrough)?Can you see it?What driver is attached?

  • Author

The only reference to Nvidia that I can find relates to the Audio Controller.

Something is wrong here...did you change anything?You have only audio at 04:00.0, no traces of vga, usb and serial bus..and all these things should be at bus 3 not 4..

to apply multifunction, re run the command to see if you can list VGA at 04:00.0, not audio, and other gpu devices at 04:00.1, 04:00.2 and 04:00.3

Clean also your sysconfig:

Sorry but something is wrong, either you are not applying my advices or for whatever reason your changes aren't applied, you can't have with the changes applied in the vm components of the gpu in different buses.

  • Author

I've changed the XML as per your instructions on the VM, bound the devices in Tools>System devices and have changed the sysconfig in Flash> Unraid OS.

I just wanted to check that I'm applying correctly.

I have no doubts you have good intentions to fix it :)

However I cannot be of more help if buses are not fixed, because I don't know what to do in addition to give you the settings to set the gpu as multifunction :(

Have no idea why these settings aren't applied..

  • Author

You were right. For some reason the settings did not save in the XML. I've managed to ensure that they are now saved. I've run the command from the RDP session and this is the output. I can't see a reference to NVIDIA.

Thanks for all your help.,

ok, good that you found how to fix the xml.

Now that the xml is set correctly can you attach a new diagnostics file, so we can see if there's something useful in it to track the issue?

In latest diagnostics no gpus is attached to vfio at boot and you have nvidia plugin installed in unraid which is attaching to them.

Try to attach gpu to vfio at boot to properly isolate them.

I've bound the devices again for the device. It shows this in the vfio log.

I've noticed at boot it doesn't get to the login prompt when binding these devices. Is this normal?

image.thumb.png.0de509ff1d14a8ffc75f9897a735b6a9.png

It still doesn't passthrough. I've attached the latest diagnostics.

I found that other people have reported this problem. It appears to be something to do with the HDMI port which doesn't passthrough. I swapped to using display port and it passed through straight away.

It's strange as the 2 other GPU cards passthrough via HDMI but the GTX1660ti does not. Cable and port are fine as Unraid boots on the card as it's the primary GPU in BIOS.

SOLVED:

The issue appears to be with using an HDMI cable on the VM.  I got my DisplayPort to HDMI cable out and converted one of the DisplayPort slots on the 1080 Ti to HDMI on my monitor and we are good to go.  I do wonder if passing through HDMI audio from the GPU means you can't use the HDMI output due to the HDMI audio being on the same IOMMU group as the GPU.  Not sure, but it works now.
