Hardlinks and Plex?

Featured Replies

So, I'm new to unraid. I've been watching videos like crazy and trying to make the most of my 30 day trial to insure unraid meets my needs. The problem I'm finding is that the community is so helpful and offers so much input, the tutorial videos, and active community...these are all good things, but many paths to do one thing become obsolete as the software and options progress. So someone who is new like me....it's hard to determine if a older video is still the excepted best method or if the more recent videos that sort of counter that methodology are just a different way to do things or a "better" way that was discovered (or a added feature), further down the line.

Regarding Plex and Harlinks.....I've seen the traditional methods of setting up Plex, where you have multiple shares (ie. Movies, TV, music, etc), but more recently I've seen several posts regarding Hardlinks (ie. Trash's guide and Ibracorp videos), where you Hardlink the data under one share.  Many folks say the hardlinking method is better, some say it's only better if you are using torrents (and seeding), can someone explain the benefit of hardlinking and why one might want to or not want to use that method?

Thank you!

I'm in a similar spot as you were back in April. I'm curious to know how you set your shares up in the end, since you still seem to be using Unraid. Have you gotten more insight about hardlinking?

The "traditional way" over shares is the best for Plex streaming.

The "hardlink method" may be helpful if you have a bunch of videos which should "fast and without searching" be available... Just a thought...

I use only shares.
