Multiple Computers with One UPS

Featured Replies

is it possible to run two unraid machines and one windows 7 machine off of one UPS or would I be better off running three smaller UPS's?  I'm UPS shopping and am planning for the future

Thanks

Josh

Should be possible.  The apcupsd utility broadcasts its status over the network.  With apcupsd also running in another machine, that machine can pick up the mains and UPS status and act upon it.  I have the Windows version of apcupsd in my Win 7 box monitoring my unRAID box.  It will power down gracefully in the event of a power failure before unRAID has told the UPS to switch off.

Apcupsd has many configuration parameters, so you may need to play a little, but once set up it's pretty good.

Yes you can. I've got my main server connected through the serial cable and the unRAID box picks it up through the LAN.

The apcupsd website manual has pretty much all the info you need, but from memory so double check:

The box connected via serial/usb has the NIS server turned on. ( I think that is the default)

The IP addresses it listens to is set to all as the default I believe.

The box that is connected to the LAN has the cable set as ether.

And the IP address set to the connected box.

It probably is a good idea to make sure that the router/switch is also connected to the UPS or will receive power.
