May 19, 201115 yr I'm so close to getting my Unraid to work perfectly. The only problem I seem to be having now is random disconnects when moving large files. With the help of others on the board I found that my realtec NIC could be the problem. I'm trying to install a new Intel-based card that came today but I have no clue about how to turn it on and get to talk to my system. So close and yet so far away. Could someone please take a look at the JPEG I have included using the line command: ethtool eth0 ? I have shut off the onboard NIC card connection using the B IOS. Many thanks.
May 20, 201115 yr You don't have MAC address filtering on your network, do you? New card, new MAC address. Just trying to think out loud. And the other end of cable is still plugged into your router? I had no problems setting up my Intel card--just disabled the old one in BIOS, plugged in, and it was pretty much automatic.
May 20, 201115 yr Have you tried another cable and/or switch port, and power-cycled the switch? I've had Intel cards refuse to sync or just sync at really low speeds when the port or cable was at fault. While other cards looked better initially they would later show grievous error rates or worse. The EtherExpress card seemed better able to detect or respond honestly to these problems. Give us an ethtool -S eth0 Syslog might also be useful. Hope I didn't miss it somewhere in these posts.
May 20, 201115 yr Author ethtool -S eth0 Is attached as a JPEG. One thing I am noticing is that the onboard LAN is not disabled even though I've carefully selected that option when setting the the BIOS. it continues to function even though the new NIC card does not. Hope I'm giving you the right information here. I am definitely not experienced with Linux stuff! I have cycled the switch and tried a couple of cables. Thanks for your patience and help. syslog_5-19-2011_a.doc.zip
May 20, 201115 yr Your syslog says eth0 is the built-in Realtek, which would explain no link on the Intel. The Intel shows as eth1. What I've read here so far says eth1 use isn't obvious to configure or we could just go that direction. Might be better to work harder at disabling the Realtek. When you disable the Realtek, does it re-enable itself or just not pay attention to the setting? What board is this? Which BIOS screens have you used to disable the nic?
