May 20, 201115 yr Guidence requested. Too many changes at one time are overwhelming me. I have freed up (emptied) one disk to replace with 2TB. I am not running parity yet! I am still running old version of unMenu version 1.1 as the server is not on the internet and that appear to be the only why to install the new version of unMenu - GREAT! I also just upgraded unRAID to 4.7 from 4.4.2 and downloaded the most current preclear script. This will be the first time i use it! I stopped the array and set disk1 to unassigned. I shut down and disconnected the disk (and my problems began). There is no longer a restore button in 4.7 and it is reporting a missing disk (the one I unassigned). Normally I would just click restore since I am not running parity yet, but can't get passed this point. Existing disks have the jump block on them and your advice is to leave them, but will not do this for the 3 new 2TB disks I want to add and enable parity on one of them. I have changed "Default partition format:" to MBR 4K-aligned. I am assuming once I do figure out what to do with the "missing disk" message, I shutdown then connect the new disk, boot up and assign the disk - so I can then run the preclear script? As a work-around I have add the new disk as disk11 (sitting outside the tower). Once I did this the sdx changed on multiple drives. I am again assuming that this is where i determine which drive to run the preclear on? Disk11 is what I want to preclear (sde)? I am a DOS man and would like to dir/ls the contents of disks to ensure I am NOT doing the wrong disk, but from telnet don't know the command structure well enough. Tried cd /dev/sdg and cd /device/sdg and also cd /disk/sdg but of course this won't work! disk1 device: pci-0000:00:08.0-scsi-1:0:0:0 host4 (sdd) ST31000333AS_9TE1NY4T disk2 device: pci-0000:05:07.0-scsi-2:0:0:0 host7 (sdg) SAMSUNG_HD103UJ_S13PJDWS238597 disk3 device: pci-0000:00:07.0-scsi-1:0:0:0 host2 (sdb) WDC_WD20EARS-00MVWB0_WD-WMAZ20169742 disk4 device: pci-0000:05:07.0-scsi-1:0:0:0 host6 (sdf) WDC_WD20EARS-00MVWB0_WD-WMAZ20158616 disk5 device: pci-0000:05:07.0-scsi-3:0:0:0 host8 (sdi) WDC_WD20EARS-00MVWB0_WD-WMAZ20143738 disk6 device: pci-0000:05:0a.0-scsi-2:0:0:0 host11 (sdk) WDC_WD15EADS-00P8B0_WD-WCAVU0401812 disk7 device: pci-0000:00:08.0-scsi-0:0:0:0 host3 (sdc) WDC_WD10EADS-00M2B0_WD-WMAV50063168 disk8 device: pci-0000:05:0a.0-scsi-3:0:0:0 host12 (sdl) WDC_WD10EADS-00M2B0_WD-WMAV50055264 disk9 device: pci-0000:05:0a.0-scsi-1:0:0:0 host10 (sdj) WDC_WD15EADS-00P8B0_WD-WMAVU0880190 disk10 device: pci-0000:00:07.0-scsi-0:0:0:0 host1 (sda) WDC_WD15EADS-00P8B0_WD-WMAVU0784665 disk11 device: pci-0000:05:07.0-scsi-0:0:0:0 host5 (sde) WDC_WD20EARS-00MVWB0_WD-WCAZA5278733 So to simplify: (questions 2-4 were not clear on your post, at least to limited me) 1. How do I exchange a disk where the old one is blank now? (I understand this is not a preclear issue so I won't be upset if you skip helping with this one 2. Do I have to assign the disk so I can run preclear? and does it need to be formatted in unRAID first? 3. Do i need to have "Default partition format:" to MBR 4K-aligned (considering I have several existing disks with jumper blocks on)? 4. Is there a command I can use in Telnet to view contents on the root of each drive (one-by-one) so I know I am doing the right disk? Aplogies, new to forums, and can't figure out how to post without including all the previous post to my message. Your directions would be most appreciated. So in advance, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Normally I would just click restore since I am not running parity yet, but can't get passed this point. The button was replaced with a command line command. Too many people pressed it when a disk failed and lost the ability to re-construct their failed disk when it immediately invalidated parity and set a new disk configuration. Now you must "Stop" the array, and then log in as "root" on the system console or via telnet and type initconfig Type "Yes" (three letters, Capital "Y", lower case "es") in response to its prompt. No, the preclear script will NOT work on assigned drives. It will only work on drives not assigned to the array. This is to prevent you from accidentally clearing a drive with your data.. To see the potential drives available for clearing, type: preclear_disk.sh -l You will be presented with a list of potential drives with the drive name and model/serial number. Use the model/serial number to confirm you have the intented drive as the preclear target. As a work-around I have add the new disk as disk11 (sitting outside the tower). Once I did this the sdx changed on multiple drives. I am again assuming that this is where i determine which drive to run the preclear on? Disk11 is what I want to preclear (sde)? Tried cd /dev/sdg and cd /device/sdg and also cd /disk/sdg but of course this won't work! You cannot list a drive... you can use hdparm -I /dev/sde to confirm it is the correct drive. (The hdparm command will list the model/serial number and size.) So to simplify: (questions 2-4 were not clear on your post, at least to limited me) 1. How do I exchange a disk where the old one is blank now? (I understand this is not a preclear issue so I won't be upset if you skip helping with this one If a drive is already assigned in the unRAID array on the devices page, but you've deleted all the files on it, it is still treated exactly the same as if it was full of files. To replace it with a larger drive: Stop the array Power down, replace the old drive with the new Power up Start the array. (You may have to check the "I'm sure" checkbox.) unRAID will re-construct the old drive's contents onto the new. It does this at the bit level, so it does not matter if it is empty or full, as re-construction of disks has no concept of files, it is at the sector level on the disks. 2. Do I have to assign the disk so I can run preclear? and does it need to be formatted in unRAID first? No, in fact, an assigned drive cannot be pre-cleared. 3. Do i need to have "Default partition format:" to MBR 4K-aligned (considering I have several existing disks with jumper blocks on)? That option ONLY affect new drives that have never been formatted in unRAID. It has no affect on drives already in the array. You can leave it as you've set it. 4. Is there a command I can use in Telnet to view contents on the root of each drive (one-by-one) so I know I am doing the right disk? Yes, but they do not show "contents" unless the drives have their file-systems that are mounted in the server. Your best bet is to use the model/serial number and the output of hdparm -i /dev/sdX or hdparm -I /dev/sdX or smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sdX Your directions would be most appreciated. So in advance, thank you, thank you, thank you! You are welcome.
May 20, 201115 yr 1. How do I exchange a disk where the old one is blank now? (I understand this is not a preclear issue so I won't be upset if you skip helping with this one You need to assign the new drive and type initconfig from a telnet session connected to the server, or from the command prompt running on the computer (if you have a monitor and keyboard attached). 2. Do I have to assign the disk so I can run preclear? and does it need to be formatted in unRAID first? No, if you assign a drive to the unRAID array you will NOT be able to preclear it. And formatting it would be pointless as it would be wiped out by the preclear. 3. Do i need to have "Default partition format:" to MBR 4K-aligned (considering I have several existing disks with jumper blocks on)? Yes, set the Default partition to 4K-aligned and to not put any jumpers on the WDEARS drives from now on. 4. Is there a command I can use in Telnet to view contents on the root of each drive (one-by-one) so I know I am doing the right disk? Are you talking about viewing the contents of each disk assigned to the unRAID array? If so you can type ls /mnt/disk* replace the "*" with 1,2,3, etc until you reach the number of disks that you have assigned to the unRAID array. You can, and should, use the -l (thats a lowercase "L") on your first run of preclear_disk.sh. That will list the disks that are available to be preclear'ed. I did a little write up which you can find here. Aplogies, new to forums, and can't figure out how to post without including all the previous post to my message. There is a tab/button towards the upper right hand corner of the web page that allows you to start new topics. As it is, I split this topic from the preclear thread as it is more a general help question.
