Replace Drive No Parity

Featured Replies

So I have a specific situation, I am xferring alot like 7tb worth of data to my unraid server and don't want to do a parity until all is xferred. I was moving files to an old drive that had some errors and bad sectors, got a new drive from WD. How can I replace the disk (disk5) with the new one in the same slot without a parity disk? I don't care about the data on the bad disk5. When I boot up it won't let me start because it says wrong/missing drive even though I have it set to no device the serial is still greyed out italic underneath where it was. Help!

First you'll need to stop the array and unassign disk5 on the devices page.  Then you'll need to type 'initconfig' at either the system console or via telnet.  Confirm with 'Yes'.  Or if you are using the 5.0beta version of unRAID, the same command is located under 'utilities' (called Initial Configuration, I think).  This command will cause unRAID to forget about all your current disk assignments (and any parity data, which you don't have) and start fresh.  The Disk5 slot will be empty.  You can then assign the new drive to Disk5.

This process will not touch any of the data on your data disks, so there's no risk there.  However, for future knowledge, if you have a parity drive installed and configured, then this process would invalidate your parity data and put your data at risk if a drive failure should occur.
