SATA drive converted to USB - how to get back in array?

Featured Replies

FIrst - I'm a new Unraid user, so be easy on me. :)

This week I've been moving all of the data to my Unraid array to clear a drive before adding it to the array.  I haven't built parity yet - wanted to get the cleared drive into the server first.  Tonight, I went to put that drive in, but while I was in there I somehow tweaked and pulled a SATA power connector off of one of the OTHER drives - breaking off the plastic piece that holds the pins in place.

Long story short - I found a temporary solution to get the drive back up and running...  I used the USB controller board from an old external drive enclosure I had laying around (it has the SATA data and power connectors in a single piece, so everything lined up and the connections worked) to connect the drive back to the Unraid system over USB instead of SATA.

The problem now is that Unraid sees it as a different drive (the model number matches the old USB drive instead of what it was when it was connected via SATA).  Is there some way that I can force this drive back into the array long enough to either build parity or copy the data off of it and onto one of the other drives in the array?

Also open to any other advice... :)

You can use tools - new config, tick Preserve current assignments then assign back the correct disk in disk slot.

Just don't wrongly assign data disk be parity.

Thanks!  That option makes me nervous - says it will reset the array?  I want to preserve the data that's on my array (spread across both the existing SATA drives and the one I've moved to USB).

If it's possible to just mount the xfs filesystem on that USB disk and copy the files from there to somewhere else (preferably back into the array), that seems like the simple approach.  But I don't know if that's possible - Unraid is my first experience with xfs...

It isn't reset array, just let you change the disk ID assignment, data in data disk won't change.

That's OK, just need time for copying .....

OK I did a bunch of digging today and finally found some posts of other people using the same USB to SATA adapter that I have.  Turns out these Western Digital boards need to have a chip disabled in order to pass through the drive model/capabilities/whatever.  Once I did that, plugged the drive in via USB, and rebooted Unraid - it saw the drive as itself and automatically put it back into the array where it belongs.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I think I can take it from here.  Just have to get all of the files off of that drive and onto other drives in the array, and I'm done!
