June 12, 201115 yr Fisrt off, please bear with me - I'm a 58 year old woodworker doing my best to keep up. I use my Unraid server (version 4.5.6.) primarily to store media content (music, movies, photos etc). I use it with an HDI Dune media player and recently discovered that it is possible, by pressing the wrong key on the Dune remote, to delete files and folders. Although there is an "are you sure you want to do this" prompt, it is still a less than desirable "feature" of the media player. So, to get round it, I thought I could use "user lever security". I set myself as a user and set all the shares to "Export Read Only" with myself as an exception. My thinking was that the "Dune" would be able to see the shares and read the content, but not modify (or delete) it. However, when I tried to access the media through the dune, it won't let me do it. I get a message saying access denied or some such. I'm guessing it's something flaky with the Dune but is there anything I can do with Unraid to overcome this? Maybe I need to set the Dune up as a "user" but I can't do it from the player. I know its mac address and IP address (which is static). Is there any way to create a user or assign access permissions for the IP or mac address? Or this there any other way I make it impossible for content to be deleted from the media player.
June 12, 201115 yr This should work without creating users. I don't have version 4.5.6 so my advise is based on version 4.7. Configure the User shares as read-only and export Disk shares as read-write. Point Dune at the read-only shares and do writing to the disk share. This gives you more control because you can select on which disk each write occurs. Many prefer this configuration. You can export the disk shares as hidden so they don't appear on the network for some additional protection. I believe version 4.5.6 has a major bug where all disks may falsely appear a unformatted. If this happens DO NOT press format!!! Restarting the server should remedy the problem.

I can't think why, other than its some sort of flaky smb implementaion with the Dune itself. I thought it mights have been something to do with bookmarks where the Dune might need to right to the media folder. However, I don't think this can be the case as in order to use bookmark features, you have to use system storage in the form of a usb stick connected to the Dune. I use a cache disc too so prefer to use the user share route rather than disc shares. Never seen the bug you describe. Thanks anyway.
