First build...(been away from building for some time) Norco 24 drive monster

Featured Replies

Still figuring things out...will have many questions once I get more involved with my first UNRAID build. I've been away from building computers for several years...so please bear with me :)

Anyway, here is what I have going on:

OS at time of building: unRAID 4.7 Pro

CPU: Intel Core i3-550 Clarkdale 3.2GHz

Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O

RAM: Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 Server Memory

Case: NORCO RPC-4224 4U Rackmount Server Case with 24 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bays w/ 120mm Fan Plate

Power Supply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-650TX 650W

SATA Expansion Card(s): (2) Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8, PCI-Express x1 Controller Card (Silicon Image SIL3132)

Cables: (4) NORCO C-SFF8087-D SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 Internal Multilane SAS Cables, (2) NORCO C-SFF8087-4S Discrete to SFF-8087 (Reverse breakout) Cables

Fans: (3) Scythe SY1225SL12M 120mm "Slipstream" Case Fans, (2) ARCTIC COOLING ACF8 Pro PWM 80mm Case Fan

Parity Drive: 2 TB HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000

Data Drives: ( 5 ) 2 TB HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 (Had to RMA 1 drive (clicking) w/ Hitachi)

Cache Drive: 2 TB HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000

Total Drive Capacity: 24 Drives

Primary Use: Data storage, media streaming to Mac Mini HTPC and other computers running Plex

Likes:

Dislikes: Even with upgraded fans...a bit on the noisy side

Add Ons Used: Still figuring these out...

Future Plans: Add more data drives...

Here are a few pics...notice the empty SATA holders on the Motherboard....just ordered the correct cables today!

You ordered the correct cables.  The House Brand Molex 79576-3007 is just a generic version of the NORCO C-SFF8087-4S.  The purpose of the cable is to hook up the SATA backplanes to your motherboard SATA ports and the SIL3132 ports.  If the House Brand cables didn't work for this purpose, then they were probably just defective.  The Norco Reverse Breakout should work just as well, they are just more expensive.

I tested my Norco 4220 with the same Scythe fans.  They are much quieter than stock, but were still to noisy for what I wanted.  I tried one Scythe and two Xigmatek fans.  It reduced the sound by about 3 db.  Ultimately I went with 3 Xigmatek fans.  My drive temps run around 35C (38C on my 7200 rpm drives) when loaded, like when running a parity check.  They idle at about 26C in a 25C ambient. There is enough airflow in the front that a piece of paper will suck to the drive trays and stick there.  I'm pretty happy with those fans.  I still hear a little noise, but I think it is from the air going through the front cages, not from the fans.  Of course I'm only running 9-10 drives now, so it remains to be seen how well they work with 21 drives.

FYI, Norco recommends 75 cfm 120mm fans for their 120mm fan plate.  I'm not sure how they settled on that number, since that is way more total cfm than their 80mm fan plate would draw.

Can i just say... very impressive build mate!

Loving the pics  :)

Still preclearing 2 of my Hitachi drives. Almost complete though, as they are at 96% and 98% on the Post-Read step...

For the OCD in me...can someone let me know if my SATA cables are connected correctly?

Right now, I have them:

© Mobo SATA 2: P2

(D) Mobo SATA 3: P3

(A) Mobo SATA 0: P0

(B) Mobo SATA 1: P1

(E) Mobo SATA 4: P0

(F) Mobo SATA 5: P2

SATA Controller Card (SYBA SD-SA2PEX-2IR):

P2 and P3

As I've said...I been away from building computers for quite some time (12 years or so... ) and SATA is brand new to me....thanks for any help/info!

It really doesn't matter which order you put those in, unRAID won't care.  My only suggestion is to make sure the parity drive and cache drive (if used) are connected directly to the motherboard slots.  The data drives can be connected anywhere.
