October 26, 20223 yr My situation keeps getting worse. I inherited a poorly run IT department and the root password stopped working after I had to fire the admin of said department. He has unraid setup on a server with a boot drive. Do I still need a USB key to recover? Do I need the key he would have created at the start? If I can't gain access to the key, then what are my options to restore without dataloss?

Is there no USB drive in the computer? Unraid is not installed on a physical disc and only boots from the USB. Also, all drives are technically independent. So plugging them into another linux computer will allow you to see the data on the drives individually as a last resort Edited October 26, 20223 yr by jmztaylor
October 26, 20223 yr Community Expert A bit more information. Here is a link to the Setup Guide: https://wiki.unraid.net/Articles/Getting_Started And to the complete Documentation: https://wiki.unraid.net/Documentation You will note that there is a discussion about the Boot Flash Drive. This Boot Flash Drive should be inserted (and remain inserted) into a USB port on the server. If you don't see it outside of the case, look inside the case because it is sometimes mounted on an attached USB header on the MB. If you don't see it there, it has probably been a victim of sabotage. This server will continue to function without the boot drive until it has been shutdown. So copy off the files that are critical as soon as possible! If you find the drive, it is a simple matter to reset the password for the root account. If the drive is missing, we can help you get the server setup back up. You might have to purchase a new license as the license is linked to the GUID number on the USB drive. If you have the purchase documentation for the purchase of the license, you could see if LimeTech will provide you with a replacement license. (They have done this in the past for folks...) After you get a replacement license, ask back and we can assist you in setting up the server so that you don't lose any data. (This loss of a boot disk is not that uncommon but usually it caused by the failure of a USB drive where the user has failed to make proper backups. If you can find a backup of your boot drive for this system, the recovery process could go much smoother.) Edited October 26, 20223 yr by Frank1940

I'm going to go take a look and report back. EDIT: I have the thumb drive and I'm back in the server. Thanks so much! Edited October 26, 20223 yr by DeadLights
