[SOLVED] can't remove User Share and User Share creation question

Featured Replies

ok, i know i probably shouldn't have done this, but after creating a User Share that didn't work the way i needed it to, i tried to remove it again through the WebGUI, without success (there is no delete or remove option that i can see)...after some poking around, i deleted the flash/config/shares/Movies.cfg file, thinking that after a reboot, it might keep unRAID from trying to re-create it...no such luck...the "Movies" User Share still exists, which make me think that i shouldn't have just deleted the file...how can i rectify this situation.

and while i'm at it, how do i properly create a User Share for "Movies", if my directory structure on the unRAID is as follows (btw. i have one User Share called "unRAID" that works as it should, combining all 13 disks into one shared directory):

unRAID (all disks)

> Downloads

> Media

> Movies

> Music

> Production

> Software

if i *only* want to export "Movies" as a separate User Share, what do i need to enter into the "Add User Share" WebGUI?

in the Wiki it states:

Deleting User Shares

To delete a User Share, just clear the Share name field and click Apply. Only entirely empty User Shares may be deleted.

but while the share i created never contained any data (since i couldn't figure it out), it was always empty...still i cannot delete it through the WebUI...after deleting the "Movies.cfg" file from the Flash stick, it isn't appearing as a share in my finder anymore, but still shows in the WebUI...doing what the Wiki states has no effect, as it keeps reappearing.

man oh man, user shares have kept me scratching my head since day one...i kind of understand them, but they still don't seem like a natural way to deal with one of the only conundrums that unRAID creates (next to all the amazing things it provides).

btw, i'm running 5.0-beta7

The unRAID web-gui can ONLY create and manage user-shares that are top level directories on the disks.  Since you have a top level directory of unRAID, that is the only user-share you can manage from the GUI.

You can however edit by hand a file on the flash drive to create your own user-shares on sub-directories.  That file is

config/smb-extra.conf

In it you would need to add sections like this:

[Downloads]

path = /mnt/user/unRAID/Downloads

read only = No

[Media]

path = /mnt/user/unRAID/Media

read only = No

[Music]

path = /mnt/user/unRAID/Music

read only = No

etc...

If the config/smb-extra.conf file does not exist, create it.  Use an editor that does not put MS-dos style carriage returns at the ends of the lines.

Every top level directory on a disk is a user share. Share the disks and go to each disk and delete the directory (share) you want to get rid of. Then, delete the config file you already tried to remove. Then stop and start the array. The share will be permanently gone.

I don't understand your other question. You have one share called unRAID and store everything inside this share. You can't use the interface and make another share inside a share. You can use the smb-extra.conf file to manually create a "share inside a share". If you want a Movies share then it will be completely seperate from the unRAID share.

I personally don't understand the desire to have a single share, that is unless you are using a media player that can only access a single share. You can't set-up different disks or split levels for the media types when it's all just one big share.

ha! brilliant!! never read anything about the samba-extra.conf...worked like a charm and finally gave me an understanding on how i can use my unRAID even better...thank you, Joe :)

and thank you, Peter, for pointing me toward the solution of how to get rid of that pesky user share...after scanning through all the disks, i found that disk11 still had some left-over files and empty directory in it...since i couldn't delete it through the finder, i telnet'ed in, tried to do remove it with the rm command, but a google search later, i found the correct syntax (rm -rf Movies/)...went into the WebGUI, was able to delete the Movies share in there as well, stopped and re-started the array, Movies share gone, and a new Movies and Music user share appeared thx to Joe's pointer.

oh, and since you asked, Peter, i like to have an unRAID user share to have one place where i can see all directories in one view, compare directory sizes, etc...just an administrative thing i like...since i am no command line wizard by any standard, i still have my weird ways of doing things that could probably be done by your fingers without thinking.

guys, i will sleep better now (and sleep i will, as it's after midnight here in Germany).

my gratitude goes out to you two, and this amazing software and forum!
