Unraid forgets SMB Password

Featured Replies

I have a strange problem that just started occurring with one UnRaid server I maintain.  Periodically the SMB password corrupts or forgets.  One day when I log into my workstation I can not map drive share anymore.  I map the drive shares using a script so the password is always correct, however twice now (several months apart) my drives have failed to map due to an incorrect password.  I go into my script and copy the password.  I log into the UnRaid UI and reset the user password for my SMB share by pasting the script password in.  It will work now as normal.  I am not sure why this is happening.  I have never has this experience with any other UnRaid box.  Does anyone has any ideas or suggestions.  It is  a minor thing and takes a few minutes to fix but it should not happen at all.  Current running version is 6.11.3.  I know 6.11.5 is out but I have not got around to moving there yet (lots of dockers and VMs running).

Let me give you some information that may help.

There are three files (smbpasswd, shadow, and passwd) in the   /config  directory on your boot drive that contain the login information.  It is my understanding that these files are copied from that location to somewhere in the RAM file system that Unraid/Linux 'installs' itself when the server boots up.  If you change a password, it has to be changed in two places.  i.e., the boot drive and the RAM file system.

I suspect (please note that word) that the write to the flash drive is not going well.  It does not matter once you update the smb password as it has a copy in RAM that it will use for day-to-day operation.  When it does make a difference is when the system is rebooted as the password on the flash drive is missing/wrong...

Ok I will check the USB and see what I can figure out.  The device is not on premises so it may have rebooted.  I will keep an eye on the uptime too.  Honestly I did not think to check that.  Thank you.

I can confirm the issue that unraid is not writing the change to usb and only to ram.  I am planning on swapping the boot usb and see if the issue resolves this week

Try to backup the flash drive now!    On the    MAIN   tab of the GUI, click on    'Flash'  under 'Boot Device', look for the      'Flash Device Settings'   and click on the 'FLASH BACKUP' button.  That will download the backup to your PC's browser's 'Download' directory.
