Minerva - Gaming, Transcoding NAS

Recommended Posts

Minerva originated in an off lease desktop, 8GB DDR3 ram, intel i5 of some sort, and 4tb of drives.
Started off just as a Plex server, then slowly grew into a downloader, file storage, then got into vm's, running a few smart home apps.
Over the last 4 years Minerva has upgraded to what she is today;

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X (12 core, 24 thread, currently 4.65GHz) - 4 cores dedicated to the gaming VM.
CPU Cooler: be quiet Dark Rock Pro 4
Motherboard: ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO (WI-FI)
RAM: 64GB (4x 16GB) DDR4 G.SKill 3200MHz
Case: Phanteks p600s
PSU: Still the original off lease (Is planned for an upgrade) G600S, corsair I think?, 650W gold.
HBA: LSI SAS 9207-8i (LSI2308)

Parity Drive:
8TB WD Red Pro

4 x 4TB Iron-wolf
1 x 4TB WD Red
1 x 6TB Ironwolf
1 x 2TB Barracuda

Cache Drives:
Appdata:

Storage / transfer:
1TB Crucial BX500
VMDISK:
1 x 500GB Kingston NV1 NVMe M.2
GamingVM Disk:
1 x 256GB Lexar NM620 256GB M.2 NVMe (Passed through)

GPUs:
Transcode/Plex
:
GTX 960 4gb
GamingVM:
PNY GTX 1660S OC 6gb

Temps:
Idle: 35C
Transcoding: 35-40C
Gaming: 55-60C

Upgrades planned:
3x bequiet silent wings pro 4 (140mm intake fans)
Replace the two top phantoms exhaust with current intake fans (bequiet silent wings 3 140mm)
New PSU, Possibly 850W THOR P

Currently the temps are running hot as my new apartment is extremely warm, idling around 50C, so that is something I will need to work on, possibly looking into water cooling the CPU to help with some of the heat.  Drives sit around 35-41C.
I want to stress that once the new PSU is installed  the cable management will improve greatly.  The current PSU isn't modular and has a lot of excess cables which aren't being used / creating this mess at the back

The Phanteks p600S is a great case, has ample storage for drives (Albeit you have to buy the extra drive caddy) Plenty of room, and great airflow options & has a glass side panel! who doesn't love a glass side panel.
The case itself has 2 panels you can completely remove for better airflow, or leave them on for noise dampening.
CPU is running great, haven't run into any issues at all.
GPU passthrough had some issues originally, however a new motherboard appeared to have resolved that.

More details on apps / usage coming.
