How do you know if a Hard Drive is really dead?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I have a stack of 1.5TBs that I had in another UnRaid system, and I know that one or two of them had been taken out of the array by UnRaid - I think for write failures...  but I lost track of which was which and now I have them all booted up in a new UnRaid system and I can't tell that there's anything wrong.

I can run the SMART reports with UnMenu.  Should I be looking for values that exceed the Threshhold?  Or at what point is a drive worthy of warranty replacement?

Thanks,

Russell

Normally you are looking for large numbers of reallocated or pending sectors. But a failed overall health would also indicate a bad drive. I'd n doubt about a drive post its smart report and get community input.

Re-preclearing is not a bad idea, but normally not required.
