July 14, 201114 yr Hi everybody, I have built my unRaid server one year ago and everything was fine until two days ago. For the story, I moved house one month ago, before that, all works fine. When I connected my server in my new home, i got some problems to see it on the network. I checking all and do some reboot... it finally works (but I don't know what happened). New home=New modem's provider. Few seconds after connecting this new modem, the unRaid server was unreachable and my problem begin... If I reboot the server and try to access to the main page. I've got a response during few seconds (i begin to see some elements of the page), then nothing... "Destination Host Unreachable" I try : - set DHCP on - set DHCP off with a correct IP - boot with all drives disconnected - make a new unRaid USB stick with latest release (with no drive connected) - change network cable (i try Cat 5, 5e, 6, 6a) - connect the server directly to the modem (no switch, no other PC, just the modem and the server) - connect the server directly to a PC (both with static IP) And all the time I've got the same problem, - the server start - login as root - I try to ping the modem or another PC - some ping are transmitted during few seconds - then some are lost, some return Destination Host Unreachable - and after one minute or two, all ping return Destination Host Unreachable I noticed one thing : after a boot, if I don't do anything the green light for network activity begin to blink continuously (even if there is no drive connected) Another important thing, I have a live USB stick of Ubuntu, when I boot the server with it, the network works very well and I have no deconnexion ! Someone have an idea ? syslog-2011-07-14-2258.txt
July 14, 201114 yr We need to know more about the topology. You mentioned a different modem. Are you relying on your ISP's modem/device for your internal network, plugging everything in there, or do you have your own router/switch? If everything is plugged into their equipment you have to do some homework to find out their requirements. They may restrict connections by MAC address or who knows what.
July 15, 201114 yr Author The modem is also a switch/router. I have simplify my network for making tests. Now he looks like this : [modem/switch/router]-----[unRaid server] | ---[PC on Windows 7] There is no restriction (on MAC address or whatever) on the modem. When I boot the server with a live USB of Ubuntu, I've got a connexion to the network. So I don't think it's a hardware failure or a problem of compatibility with the new modem.
July 15, 201114 yr Are the modem ports Mb or Gb? What was it connected to before when it worked? Can we see the output of ifconfig eth0 after you try a few network connections? If it's trying Gb to the router have you tried forcing 100Mb? (ethtool -s eth0 speed 100) When you run Ubuntu from the stick, what do you get from ifconfig eth0?
July 15, 201114 yr Author Modem, server and PC, all are in Gb. The modem I have before is in Mb and does'nt have switch. ifconfigunRaid.txt ifconfigUbuntu.txt
July 15, 201114 yr I assume it's trying for Gb. I don't see any errors but there wasn't much activity. How about ethtool eth0, just to be sure? Then try the ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 command, and then your tests again. Any better? You might want to try 4.71 or even the 5.0b line. The newer Realtek drivers might help you get a working Gb connection. Of course, careful if you start down that path. To be safe I'd say unplug your hard drives so you can keep the experimentation to the network and not involve your production array.

I will try to find a NIC in PCI-e x1 (Like this one) Good idea or not?
July 21, 201114 yr Realtek nics can work, or can be frustrating. If you're adding a card you might as well get an Intel. They're the most trouble-free and the driver is very tunable. Either PCI or PCIe would be fine. There are sellers on ebay with new Intel pro cards for under $15USD.
July 21, 201114 yr Author Ok for an intel NIC, but on my motherboad (ZOTAC 479 NM10-DTX B) I only have one PCI-e 16X and one PCI-e 1X In France, for this format, I found nothing under $39USD :'( Intel - EXPI9301CTBLK ~ $40USD Intel - PWLA8391GTBLK ~ $49USD or maybe this one (MCAD 300550 - $29USD), but I don't know if it's a Realtek chipset or not. Considering the price, I'd be bummed if it doesn't work.

August 1, 201114 yr Author I finally buy a new NIC (Intel EXPI9301CT BLK) Before installing her, I saw a new release of unRaid (5.0b10) with Realtek "r8168" ethernet driver. I try it but the onboard network doesn't appear when I do a ifconfig... So I install the new NIC with unRaid 4.5.6 (drives unplugged) => ifconfig : OK => Ping : OK I plug the drives, start unRaid => ifconfig : OK => Ping : OK Update to 4.7 => all is OK !!! Finally it works, but I don't understand why it doesn't with the onboard network... In any case, thank you all for your help!
