July 15, 201114 yr Hi, When copying files to the unraid disks the speed is abit slow. It varies to around 5 to 12 MB/s but mostly around 6. When i copy a file back to the PC i get speeds up to from 80 to 100 MB/s, very fast. I use a gigabit network, here is are the details of the NIC in the unraid server, Settings for eth0: Supported ports: [ TP ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Speed: 1000Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: Twisted Pair PHYAD: 1 Transceiver: internal Auto-negotiation: on Supports Wake-on: g Wake-on: g Current message level: 0x000000ff (255) Link detected: yes Any thoughts? thanks, Ron
July 16, 201114 yr The speed is not only related to the network. Reading only use the one disk where the data is store. Writing use the data disk AND the parity drive. If one of those drives is slow, that will be the fester you can write to the array. I believe that your parity drive is slow (for wathever reason). Check for loose cables (replace them). Check the raid card (if it is connect to one). Check the MB bios for a slow transfer rate. and post a syslog, please.
July 16, 201114 yr Author think i found the cause, Because it is a test setup i power down the server when not used. After starting the Parity disk is checked and this takes a long time. No i waited untill finnished and copying to the drives goes with about 20Mbit/s. Id this a ok speed? Because copying back (reading) goes alot faster.
July 16, 201114 yr Are you saying you power down without shutting down the array first, so when you boot, it does a parity check? Then yes, a parity check running would definately affect your write speeds. The parity disk would be being heavily used. Best pratice to power down a server, STOP the array from the GUI, then shutdown the server form the GUI. That way when you power it back up, everything should be valid and not need to run a Parity check. A write at 20Mb/s is ok and yes, read speeds are always a lot faster. This is why many of us who write a lot to the system use a cache drive, can get 40-60Mb/s on average, as you are writting to a non protected drive, then the mover script moves it to protected drives later on... July 16, 201114 yr Author Yea, you are correct, i didn't stopped the array before shutdown, my mistake but i do know the procedure now. Think getting a plus license once i get my good server up and running . I'm very pleased of Unraid. Ron
