Disks never spin down after failed cache replacement

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was searching for months now for my problem. My disks never spin down as soon as I start the docker service or the vm manager. Sometimes it may or may not spin up the disks immediately, but they will never spin down. I tried "open files" and "file activity" to search for indicators that wouldnt let my disks spin down. But I dont know what causes the problem. I dont know linux and dockers very well, so I could do some deep research or even understand how to use most of the commands for the console. My unraid worked for years now. I just wanted to replace the cache ssd from a 256gb to a 500gb one. Unfortunately I didnt do much research for how to do that right and broke some of my docker settings. Now I have an arrey of ssds as a cache, but my disks wont spin down and I dont know what to do without reinstalling unraid, which I dont know how to do without losing my data.
I attached my diagnostics, so somebody could help me. I would really appreciate it :

All of your docker/VM related shares are on the array. If you had Docker and/or VM Manager enabled when you didn't have cache then those would have been created on the array. You want appdata, domains, system shares all on fast pool (cache) so Docker/VM performance isn't impacted by slower array, and most importantly for your problem, so array disks can spin down since these files are always open.

Mover ignores cache-only shares. Set appdata, domains, system shares to cache-prefer.

Nothing can move open files, so you will have to disable Docker and VM Manager then run mover to get these moved.

Finally, mover won't replace files, so if any already exist on cache you will have to clean that up manually. Looks like appdata is the only share that currently has any of its files on cache, likely created after you got cache going again, so maybe you won't have anything to clean up.

You can see how much of each disk is used by each user share by clicking Compute... for the share, or the Compute All button, on the User Shares page.

First: Thanks for the fast response!
Second: So do I need to delete the files on the cache now? I was a bit confused by the "cache-only", "prefer" and "yes" option

Edit:

I tried setting the shares you mentioned as prefer without deleting anything and it just works now. Easy fix for my very frustrating problem.Thank you very much! Now I can configure everything else

These single words aren't enough to make sense of them but nobody has thought of anything better to call them. You can toggle help on/off for most settings by clicking its label. You can also toggle Help for everything with the Help (?) button on the main bar.

Also, the wiki can be accessed by clicking "manual" at lower right of your webUI, or the Documentation link at bottom of the forum.
