Thoughts on proposed Unraid upgrade

Featured Replies

It's been about 10 years since I've upgraded my computer. The current specs on my unraid server are:

  • Intel Core i5-3570k
  • Gigabyte Z77-DS3H
  • 16GB DDR3
  • GTX 1070

The current prime use of the server is to run my Plex Media Server and associated Docker containers.

However, I'd like to use a VM for some light gaming (ie. Europa Universalis IV, Star Wars Jedi Series, Gloomhaven, etc.) and my current motherboard doesn't allow GPU passthrough for the 1070 so it's kinda worthless in my current set up. Plus I'm limited in the amount of Sata ports on my current motherboard for expandability of my server. I've thought about a dedicated gaming set up, but I really don't think the cost is worth it for me for how little I spend gaming these days.

My proposed upgrade is:

  • Intel Core i9-13900k
  • ASRock Z790 Pro RS
  • 32GB DDR5-5600
  • Keeping the GTX 1070

My question is what limitations and problems should I be anticipating with this proposed build. Also, I'd love to hear other alternatives as one of my biggest struggles is finding a motherboard with additional sata ports. I have a Fractal Design r-5 with enough space for 10 3.5 hd and several 2.5 SSDs, but I'm limited with the onboard sata ports.
